Five

When I wake up for school the next morning, Liam is already gone. I sigh and get in my car to head off to school.

Somehow, I hadn't seen any one of my friends this morning. Had Liam told everyone what I said? I shake off any bad feelings I had and made my way to Biology.

I get to class a few seconds after the bell rang and quickly took my seat before Finch caught me. I could feel Theo's eyes on me but ever since leaving things bad with Liam, I wasn't so sure I should be happy to see him. Things got heavy between us before Liam interrupted us and my anger at my brother caused me to say things I didn't mean.

All because of Theo.

"So, while introducing the African Cane Toad sounded like a good way to deal with Australia's infestation of the Grey-backed beetle, unfortunately, the toad also decided to eat everything else in sight..."

I wasn't thinking. I got mad and said some stupid things to my brother all over a guy who I don't even know. Who none of us know.

I can't blame him, though.

"... quickly died from the poison they secreted. A perfect example of an invasive species. One-hundred and two toads introduce in 1935 became one-point five billion by 2010."

I feel him poke my shoulder, but I ignore him. I try my best to write my notes down instead of looking at him.

"Once an invasive species is introduced, everything changes." I look up at the teacher's words at this. Something about it doesn't sit right with me. I furrow my brows slightly.

Theo pokes my shoulder again and I glance at him quickly. He points to a girl sitting close to Lydia.

The girl was visibly upset. She kept grabbing at her head and pulling at her hair. I look towards Scott who was oblivious. I turn back towards Theo and he points to his notebook.

Chimera? He wrote.

I glance at his eyes for a moment before getting my phone out of my pocket. I got Lydia's attention by texting her. She turns slightly to look back at me and I nod at the girl behind her and Lydia cast her gaze upon her.

As the girl pulls her hands down in front of her face, she looks at the hair that was wrapped around her palms. She quickly jumps straight up and out of her seat, striding towards Mrs. Finch's desk and slapping a withdrawal form on it.

"Wise decision, Sydney." Mrs. Finch says.

Lydia stood, causing Finch and the rest of us to look at her.
"You know it's for the best." Finch says as Lydia followed after Sydney.

Scott turns to look at me, but I look down to avoid his gaze. I was too worried that Liam had told him what happened last night. As I see Scott slowly turn his head back around, I turn mine to look at Theo who was staring at me intently.

"You okay?" Scott asks me. I look between him and Theo quickly.
"Yeah, sure." I lie easily.

I look down a hall before going the opposite way.

"Are we going the right way? Can you get her scent?" I ask, looking between Scott and Theo again.
"We're going the right way." Theo nods.
"Let's hurry." Scott says.

"Lydia, are you okay?" Scott asks as we make our way to her.
We find her passed out, with no sign of Sydney.

"I'm okay. I'm fine." She replies.
"What happened? Did you see something?" I ask.

"Not about the Dread Doctors... Nothing about them or the surgery."
"What was it?" Scott questions, helping Lydia stand.
"My grandmother. At Eichen House." She responds as we hear someone's heels walking closer to us.
