Don't you ever wonder how to say mom, dad, brother, sister, etc. well that's what today's lesson is on.
mom- 어마 (eo-ma)
mother-어머니 (eo-meo-ni)
dad-아빠 (appa)
father - 아버지 (a-beo-ji)
grandfather- 할아버지 (hal-abeoji) (for this one the ㄹ will sound more like like an r/l mix this also goes when you say grandma)
grandmother- 할머니 (hal-meo-ni)
*in kdramas i hear this alot. i think grandmother in korean is so pretty*
aunt- 이모 (imo)
uncle- 삼촌 (sam-chon)
* the photo above has a different term which is kind of like uncle but it's what you call a middle aged man who is to old for you to call 오빠 so you say 아저씨 (ah-jeo-ssi) *
brother- 형제 (hyung-jae)
little brother-남동생 (nam-dong-saeng)
*usually they just say 동생 (dong-saeng) to my guess is the other person already knows the gender of their younger sibling this goes for both younger brother and sister *
big brother- for little brothers they call their older brothers 형 (hyung) for little sisters they call them 오빠 (oppa)
오빠 (oppa) is used a lot even if people aren't related. girls in korea call males older sometimes even male's younger than them 오빠. most of the time it's because they like the male or aren't sure what their actual age is, this happens to my best friend who is moving to america today. hence why when americans call a male in korea that they barely know 오빠 it throws them off and makes them awkward hence why it is smart to wait until they tell you to call them 오빠 because then you're doing it out of respect. Kpop females usually call the idols who are males that have been in the industry longer or are older 오빠 out of respect. in the end just be careful using this term.
siser- 여자 형제 (yeoja-hyungjae)
little sister- 여동생 (yeo-dong-saeng) or just 동생 (dong-saeng)
big sister- for younger males its 누나 (noona) and younger females its 언니 (pronounced as unni)
*as you noticed the way i'm putting it isn't the way the characters usually sound but that is because in these words that is how they sound this is the little confusing part of korean sometimes*
