The pains started subtly on your mission this morning. It was nothing major and you figured it you we're beginning to cramp because of that time. You headed off to the nurses station once you touched back down, popped a few painkillers and went about your way. Come home for dinner you were feeling short of breath. You picked away at your food mindlessly, not feeling very hungry, which was unusual for you. Poe seemed to notice and cocked a brow at you.
"Everything okay?" he asked from across the table.
You nodded your head, feeling slightly sick to your stomach, "Yeah, I think I just need to lay down for a bit," you said standing up.
"You sure you're okay?" Poe asked again watching carefully as you swayed where you stood.
"It's probably just a small bug, no need to worry," you waved him off and headed towards your shared quarters.
When you arrived there you had to she'd yourself of your uniform. The fabric sticking to your back from the sweat. You decided a cold bath would help with your temperature. Stars, you hated being sick.
The cold bath did help bring your fever down, you stepped out of the bath, pulling on your panties and bra before climbing in bed. You pulled one of the blankets over you and curled in on yourself. You promptly fell asleep, finally able to ignore the dull ache in your back.
A sudden flare of pain woke you from your peaceful sleep. Groaning, you sat up clutching your stomach in your hands from the pain, careful not to wake Poe who must had come in and joined you during some point of the night. You had an unsettling feeling in the back of your throat and quickly stalked to the bathroom. Bending over the toilet, you promptly vomited your guts out, only causing the pain to be worse.
"Poe," you called out, flushing the toilet. You felt much too weak and in too much pain to move from where you were. You tried to push yourself up again but let out a small cry of agony when you did so. "Poe," you called again, attempting to sniff away your tears.
Poe woke to the second call of his voice, he looked around confused a moment, seeing you gone from bed. He glanced to the bathroom door seeing the light on. He quickly got to his feet and made his way there, pushing the door open completely. His heart raced the moment he saw you on the floor, your skin sickly pale, sweat beading down your face and your face scrunched up in agony.
"Baby," Poe said crouching down next to you, "what's wrong?" he asked.
You groaned, trying to sit up more, "I think I need to get to the medical bay," you pushed out.
Poe nodded, helping you to your feet, grimacing every time you moved the wrong way and a new cry of pain pierced the silence. He took his time making sure you were filly clothed and half carrying you the way there. A nurse spotted you fairly quickly and rushed to get a stretcher. By this time you couldn't stop moaning in pain, clutching at your stomach wishing the pain would just go away.
"What are her symptoms?" the nurse asked.
"She has a fever, and I think the stomach pain has been going on almost all day. She was vomiting before we got here," Poe said racking his brains.
The nurse nodded, readying to push her stretcher away from him. "We will need to run a few quick tests but we will let you know how everything goes."
Poe nodded, but still looked frightening as the nurse pushed you off down the medical bay to be tested. Poe sat paced the halls, running his fingers continuously through his already roughed up curls. He didn't know how much time had passed, but each time someone passed him he would ask about your condition. He thinks that they stopped walking by him because they knew he would ask. In retrospect he knew he was being a pain and that they had patients to tend to, but when it was you, all dignity flew out the window.
The sun began to raise, he only knew this because most of the night shift workers were leaving to go to bed. Finally a nurse came down the hall, a chart in hand and heading straight for Poe.
"Commander," he greeted.
Poe straightened his back and gave a curt nod, "Is she okay? What happened?"
"It was her appendix, we caught it just in time before it could rupture. We had to take her into immediate surgery, but she's doing great. Everything went more than smoothly, she's expected to make a full recovery. Though she will be out of work for the next week or so to recover. The anesthesia should wear off in about an hour. But you're free to go see her," he explained.
Poe nodded his head eagerly, "where is she?"
He led Poe to your room, shutting the door behind him as he left, leaving you two to your privacy. Poe was happy to see that some of the colour returned to your cheeks. Even as you slept from the anesthetic you looked exhausted.
It was terrifying to him to wake up in the middle of the night and having you call out for him. In a situation like this Poe always found it was after a mission, or being shot. The either of you would have been patched up and on your way, but this was different. It gave Poe a rude awakening. No matter the war out there, and no matter how many trips you made here to be stitched, it was always the mundane things that were the most frightening.
He could see if you had been shot, he could see the wound and understand the damage it did to you. But this was different, he couldn't tell what was going on, or how much pain you actually we're in. And it scared him, you could be fighting for your life in combat and then drop dead with no injuries because of something your own body did to you.
Of course he knew it was probably a bit of an overreaction. His opinion still stood.
He was ready for you to wake up, he wanted to see the sparkle in your eyes again, he wanted to see you smile. To hear your laugh. Even if you did wake up, you would more than likely fall back asleep from the exhaustion of it all. So Poe settled for holding you hand tightly in his own, fighting off his own cry for sleep.
"I love you," Poe mumbled, pressing a kiss to your knuckles.
He let go of your hand, laying it gently next to you as he leaned back in his chair and closed his eyes.
You were going to be okay.
That's all that mattered.
