Silvana Crow was trying to be invisible. Keep her head down. Remember her new name and backstory. Don’t draw unwanted attention.
The majority of the soldiers were men, and she was getting an unwanted amount of attention. It wasn't every day, after all, that a pretty girl appears out of nowhere.
She’d told them Joanne’s story many times. She was an escaped prisoner of war, captured a while ago, and subjected to tortures that drove her insane. She could lie quite freely with other, undecorated people, but whenever someone who looked like they had authority began to ask her questions, she'd crossed her fingers and begged that they didn't check the books.
She slept in the tent, hating the smell of damp and must, the forced proximity with other people. She longed to sleep outdoors, as she always had, to feel the cool night air as she settled down, cradled in the branches of a tree.
Her roommates were three other girls, who did the majority of the cooking and cleaning. They were all very friendly with each other, and seemed to do nothing but lie on their beds and gossip. She pulled a pillow over her head, trying to sleep. She wished they'd placed her with Naoki.

..........

Naoki snuck out of his tent to his best friend, Charles. Charles was a medic, so he slept inside the base, next to the Infirmary. He’d just quietly walked through the door, when he saw Charles, standing by the wall. The two of them smiled and shook hands, and started to walk towards Charles’s room near the Infirmary, talking quietly.
"Charles, I'm telling you, there is something seriously wrong here. During my mission, I was dying. I know it, and even my old uniform was stained and had signs of cuts. But my body is cleaner than it was!"
Charles looked at him doubtfully.
"Sure they didn't just hit you in the head? No offence."
"I'll prove it to you."
He stood up.
"Remember when I got a cut on my side and you stitched it up?"
The medic nodded.
“Barely a month ago. Ugly scar.”
“Yeah. Shouldn't have even fully healed.”
Naoki said as he took his shirt off and showed him that his skin, his whole chest and stomach and arms were covered by unharmed skin.
“Look at this.”
Charles stared at his friend. This was going against all the rules.
“How..?
“You know the girl who came back with me. Joanne Smith?”
At that point, Charles stopped walking. His eyes and mouth were wide, and Naoki could see his mind was in the grip of one of his ideas.
"I have to see that girl."
He said at once.
"But we have to stay quiet so the other girls don't hear us."
Naoki informed him. The two nodded, and headed out silently.

..............

Silvana was sitting inside her tent, on her bunk, begging the other girls to shut up. If she wasn't insane before, she was now.
She was fed up. The leaders didn't trust her with any work. They didn't know quite how insane all the "torture" had made her. And yet, the Infirmary was so full, of the injured and dying. Here, she was at least out of their way.
She began to listen to the noises outside. Crickets chirping. Squirrels scampering. Owls hooting. The bangs and crashes of warfare were always in the background, and Silvana wondered what weapons they had to make that much noise. It sounded like explosives were much more common than they were back in her world. Once again, it hit her that she really was trapped in a different universe, and she shivered.
Suddenly, she stopped. People were approaching. Two. Probably male. Trying to be as quiet as they could. Still holding her breath, she got up. She could hear them getting close to her tent, on her left. Taking a deep breath, she turned to her right. She walked towards the side of the tent, knelt down, took a deep breath, and pushed her body underneath. Slowly, she eased herself onto the outdoor soil, all the time, listening for the sound of people. They were close now. Silvana pushed the last of her legs out of the tent and got on her hands and knees. She crawled to where the voices were coming from, weaving herself above and below the guy ropes. The speakers were doubtless spies. The leaders would give her a proper job, away from those girls,  if she caught them.
She crawled to the front of the tent, and took a quick look around. She saw Naoki, and another man, both standing in front of the tent. The other man was smaller and weaker, and his uniform was not torn. Probably some sort of medic. Silvana stood up, surprising them both for a moment, and made an effort to brush the dirt off her knees.
"Naoki.." she said quietly, "I thought you'd forgotten all about me."
