The journey goes unexpectedly as Dante, to his surprise and relief, finds himself in ante-Purgatorio with his lost friend Virgil. This time he is aware of the path that must be taken in order to reach Beatrice. Virgil tells Dante of the boon he has been granted: if the two climb together once more, they may both reside in Paradiso.

Mist cleared around my eyes

And on the path I stood,

A mountain loomed behind

My counterpart's dear friend

And pilgrim's long lost guide

He stood there at the end

Of the journey for my breath.

Teary eyed and pale he said,

'Let me tell you of the death

That I might have survived.

It was true I travelled with

The ghost inside your mind

And what you deemed was real

Allowed Them to be kind

To be damned in hell They feel

Would be an unjust fate

So, with you they let me wait.'
