Chapter 2: The day it all began…

Hope you liked the last chapter, :), so hopefully this one is just as good.

The next morning I walked into the kitchen and sat down next to Alissia. She smiled through the large amount of pancakes that was on the menu today, she looked like a very cheeky teenager. Amazingly the food was nice today; it was awful and sloppy yesterday. I smiled back as my pancakes were brought to the table. The nurse was sweet and spoke nervously; I then understood it must have been her first day. I knew how that felt.

After breakfast Alissia and I went to the garden and decided to play lawn bowls. As we played we talked more and more about everything and anything. We began to discover our lives were not that different after the camp…..

It all began in year 10. We had met in year 7 and were friends all through high school. We were asked to see Mrs Lively and she spoke to us about doing a school report for this camp I had never heard about it before, but it sounded alright to me because they agreed that every holidays we could come home and the excursion would only take three years.

We thought that the overall experience would be great and we would be together so we agreed. After signing multiple notes and packing multiple bags of materials and clothes we were ready. We went to school at 6:00 am and found a massive amount of students from all the high schools in the Illawarra. We spoke to a group of boys and girls from Corrimal and Woonona high. They were nice, but a certain one stood out to me.

When it was time to go we all piled on to buses that took us up to the airport. When arriving we were herded off to the international section, not being told that it was an overseas trip. We were all quite surprised and scared, but they told us we booked and had to go. Although our family were told we could come back I don’t think they thought we were going to be overseas. Alissia and I reluctantly strapped into our seats, sending consumed expressions to each other. They were immediately wiped of our faces when we realised a pair of cute guys our age were sitting in the seats beside us. Noah and Connor introduced themselves and explained that they were on the same field trip as us.

As we began to take off I decided that it would be best not to sit next to one of the boys because of an experience I have had in earlier years on planes, so I switched with Alissia so I had the outer seat. We glided along and felt very calm once in the air but there was a baby crying somewhere in the back, Alissia decided to get up and try and help calm him, having experience because of her siblings. We saw that we were headed for England and we anticipated our arrival greatly. We spoke about anything and everything. From school to home life from friends to enemies and we had some really good laughs.

After 3 hours on the plane I became drowsy and decided to have a rest. I put my headphones in and slept, I awoke to find us landing in England. We walked around the airport and already bought souvenirs for our family, knowing we would probably forget on the way back. We grabbed our luggage when we were finished and travelled with the rest of the group to find our hotel.

We arrived at our hotel to find that it was actually a camp. It was ‘the’ camp we were supposed to be starting the camp in a week but I guess they changed their mind. We found the girls dorm and settled in. We unpacked our belongings and set off to find the cafeteria.

“That’s where we began wasn’t it?” I asked, back to the present. I sounded like I was almost dead with fright at the memories; I had to sit down on one of the lawn chairs worried of toppling over. “Yes” Alissia replied silently. We both began to regain our memories and felt like we were about to suffer another stroke out of pure fright.

We decided to have a break and gather in the dining hall for dinner. After the recount of memories we had realised it was 6:00 and we were both hungry from missing lunch. We sat in our usual seats and settled down for our feed. This time we had absolute slop. Mash and peas or bubble and squeak as I like to call it. We finished eating and headed off to bed. Again I struggled to sleep. After drifting off my first dreams were peaceful and calm. They were about meeting Alissia in year 7 and then they changed dramatically into nightmares about the camp. Again and again I kept waking up scared, ‘this is not good for someone my age’ I thought internally.
