Don't move... You crouched motionless in a patch of tall grass, less than a tail-length away from a small but plump thrush. Around you, nothing stirred but a faint breeze, the sun quickly sinking behind the distant hills. The woodland around you was oddly silent, as if the entire forest was waiting for you to pounce.
Time seemed to stop as you leapt gracefully through the air, quickly unsheathing your claws which glinted in the pink light. You landed squarely on the thrush, then snatched it up in your jaws, killing it instantly.
An annoyed hiss sounded from the bushes to your left. Startled, you jumped, and dropped the catch, your fur pricking. "Who's there?" You were tired from a day of walking, and you weren't in the mood to fight over prey. Wincing, you realized that if any cat tried to attack you, you wouldn't be on any shape to fight back. I'd have to just give them the prey. You shuddered at the thought.
A lean black-and-white tom padded from the bushes. He rolled his eyes as he saw the thrush at your paws. "Just my luck. I need to stop hesitating." He turned to you and dipped his head. Then, seemingly reading your thoughts, he added, "Don't worry. I'm not going to fight you over the bird. There's other prey." His gaze switched to the tree roots behind you. He signaled with his tail for you to stay still.
He seemed to shrink to a third of his normal size as he crouched, his gaze fixed on a mouse sitting under a root while nibbling on some seeds. Slowly, he let his paws sink into the grass, almost completely silent. To the unwitting prey, it must have sounded like the only movement was a gentle breeze in the leaves above. The tom's claws slid out, but he still stood, facing the mouse.
Jump already! What are you waiting for? You're going to— the mouse suddenly darted under the root again, with no intention of coming back out any time soon. You winced at the feeling of purpose that stabbed at your belly. I can help... But then I'd have to stay here. You sighed. Without giving yourself time to make up your mind, you blurted, "I can teach you to hunt how I do, if you'd like." The tom flicked his ears. He still was facing the root the mouse had disappeared under.
"Thanks, but no thanks. I have a friend who lives in the barn with me. He used to be a Clan cat. He learned how to hunt and fight while he lived with them." He turned to you. "The name's Barley, friend." He seemed to think for a moment. Then, he looked back at you. "Do you have anywhere to stay for the night?" He tilted his head inquisitively to one side. "Because if you need to, you can stay with Ravenpaw and I. Ravenpaw's the cat who lived in the Clan."
Now it was your turn to think for a moment. If I say no, I'll have to find a place in the forest to stay, and that means dealing with Clan cats. Although, if I do go, I may get attached and not want to leave. As your thoughts swirled through your mind, you shrugged. "No, I don't have anywhere to stay. I'd be glad to stay with you guys, though." You blinked, then remembered the thrush. Prodding it, you mewed, "You can have a bite if you'd like. I can wait to eat." You watched as Barley took a mouthful, then grabbed the thrush in his jaws and carried it off through the trees, signaling for you to follow him. We must be going to the barn he mentioned. Realizing that he was getting farther away, you padded swiftly after him.
By the time you reached the barn, the sun had set and the sky was a deep purple, stars showing through the thickening clouds. You slid through the entrance. The air smelled damp and musty, like water sitting too long. Mixed in with that was the overpowering scent of mice all around you.
