You glanced up from your mouse, watching with wariness as a small flame-colored tom followed Bluestar into camp. He was no bigger than a young apprentice, and a dark blue collar hung around his neck, making a small sound every time he took a step. Well that won't scare away all the prey in the forest. You wanted to ask what was going on, but before you could do anything, Bluestar's voice rang out across the clearing.

"Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey join here together beneath the Highrock for a Clan meeting!" Her blue fur shone in the sunlight as she bounded up onto the ledge. You looked around to see if the hunting patrol was back yet, but to no avail. Tigerclaw's not going to like this, you thought, apprehension clawing at your belly.

Bluestar had explained what was going on, but it still didn't answer your question. When a fight broke out between the young cat and Longtail, you lost interest, instead focusing on your thoughts. Why a kittypet? What kind of possible asset could he provide, besides giving ThunderClan the reputation that we suddenly will take in any cat who spontaneously feels like joining? A rustle and loud pawsteps at the gorse tunnel broke you out of your thoughts.

To your surprise, Ravenpaw darted through the tunnel, his eyes glowing with fear. "Bluestar!" He yowled. "It's Redtail! He's just been killed!" The apprentice was visibly distressed, as if there were something else bothering him, but you pushed the thought away. If he's just witnessed his first murder, then no wonder.

Bluestar expression changed to one of horror at the apprentice's words. "How could this happen?" She jumped swiftly down from Highrock just as Tigerclaw padded into camp with the former deputy's body.

You turned your attention back to the meeting. You felt a warm feeling at the sight of Tigerclaw, but you didn't know why. Shrugging, you padded forwards to be able to hear the conversation more clearly.

". . . killed by Oakheart." Tigerclaw's voice was solemn as he spoke the words. "I ended up killing Oakheart in revenge for what he did. Of course, I did not mean to, but he wouldn't stop fighting and, well, things happen." He bowed his head in a vigil for Redtail, and the rest of the Clan followed his gesture, you included.

A half-moon had passed since Rusty, now known as Firepaw, joined the Clan. As you had predicted, Tigerclaw hadn't been happy. You also noted how odd his apprentice was acting. He's so jumpy since. . . You shook your head to clear it. That's for Tigerclaw to worry about.

Then, there had been that brief heartbeat when Lionheart had been made deputy that Tigerclaw's eyes had gleamed with jealousy and hatred towards the golden tom. You couldn't help but agree with Bluestar on that choice, however. While Tigerckaw was a great cat, he seemed to have this dangerous, evil streak that showed up sometimes, and that couldn't possibly be good for the Clan.

Right now you were lying in the shade of the Highrock with your eyes closed, back stretched across the ground and your belly in the air. It had been getting warmer lately, and every cat had noticed. Thankfully, you didn't have an apprentice, so you didn't have to worry about training one during the hottest parts of the day.

You flicked your ears as you heard some cat approaching. Silently, you prayed to StarClan that they weren't headed your way, but you knew it was a slim chance, since you hadn't gone on any patrols that day.

You realized the cat was standing over you, and you knew exactly who it was. You opened your eyes to see an exasperated Tigerclaw, and you sighed. He nodded in acknowledgement. "I know no cat wants to be out right now, (Y/N), but I need you on a hunting patrol." His whiskers twitching, he added, "Unless you can catch prey like that." He didn't wait for your response and turned towards Darkstripe's dozing figure.
