(Niall’s POV)
Zayn’s car sped past me and I shouted out for him to not go the way he was heading, but he passes too quickly and my voice was left unheard. I knew who was up ahead. I watched as Mr. Tanner parked his car and waited. He waited hours just in case Zayn headed back this way, which was the case. When the car zoomed by I felt my lungs constrict and every nerve in my body go haywire. Everything happened in slow motion once Zayn passing me unknowingly.
I watched in horror as Mr. Tanner pulled his car out quickly and rammed into the side of Zayn’s smaller car. The size difference between the cars was too much. While Mr. Tanner’s was only damaged in the front, Zayn’s was a completely different scenario. When his car stopped spinning it was left a mangled, metal mess. The windows were shattered, the body of the car was twisted and smoke was pouring out from the front.
I wanted to run towards the wreck. I wanted to get my hands around Mr. Tanner’s throat for running Zayn off the road. He had already done so much to ruin so many lives, and he was only just starting. I glared at my guitar pick necklace that was hanging off a small branch of the bush. I could try all I wanted to pick it up, but I wouldn’t have any luck. So there I was, standing there, unnoticed by everyone around me, watching as my killer got out of his car unscathed and my crush staying eerily still and silent in his wrecked car.
Then something strange happened. Chad was there all of a sudden. He stood there outside of the crash. He must have heard the crash from his house only a few blocks away from the crash. He looked frightened from where I stood, and he looked as though he was shouting at the car. I wanted to be closer, but with each step I took towards the crash, the stronger the pull on my body felt. When I was half way into the street that same invisible force that had kept me in the school for all those months stopped my body.
“Someone! Please!” I shouted, even though no one could hear me. I was glad, though, when some lights turned on in the few houses on the street and people started to come outside to see what the loud noise was all about. “Come on, people. Move a little faster!” I shouted, waving my arms in the air. Since it was the middle of the night, the neighborhood was fast asleep and now they were moving groggily and slowly out to the curb. I needed them to move faster. Mr. Tanner was already getting back into his car and soon he would be speeding away from the scene.
“Was there a crash?”
“This late at night?”
“What’s all the commotion?”
The families muttered and spoke to each other as they peering down the street towards the crash. Like I had thought, Mr. Tanner was already gone, leaving behind Zayn’s car. I groaned out in frustration, as I stood there helplessly unable to do anything. I couldn’t move. I couldn’t help. I could only watch. “Did someone at least call the police?” I called out, looking expectantly at the people who now crowded on the street, not to close, but far enough away so that they didn’t get involved.
My question was answered when I saw the lights of the emergency vehicles flashing in the distance. I then heard the sirens. At least someone called. I watched at the police pulled up first, taping off the scene and assessing the situation. All the while this was happening, Chad stood there. I found it odd how no one moved him away, or even acknowledged him.
