Chapter 1
I’m Sophia. But everyone calls me Soph. I live in Essex and I go to Everwood high school. There’s nothing special about me - I’m not very popular, I’ve only ever had two boyfriends, and I live with my Mum, Dad and Dog, Marmite. This is the story of how I changed, from an ordinary Essex girl, to a crushed teenager who only had one reason to live, her dog.

It was Monday, the first day back after summer, and I didn’t want to even think about school.
“Sophia! Hurry up, I’m leaving!” My Mum bellowed up the stairs.
“I’m coming,” I replied, grabbing a piece of toast from the kitchen and running out of the door, grabbing my bag as I went.
“Honestly,” my Mum sighed.

I dragged myself up the 5 flights of stairs, stepping on gum and crisp packets as I went, showing how respectful our school was when we’d only just come back from summer and had already ruined all of the cleaner’s hard work. I walked into the home room, only to find the usual, a couple of naïve couples making out, and lots of immature boys hitting on uninterested girls.
“Soph!” Mel shouted, running over to me with a can of coke. She’s my best friend. We've been really close since I can remember, and her having a can of coke in her hand is something you should get used to - she has a major coke addiction.
“Hey,” I replied, happy to see her.
“How was your summer?” she asked, even though we’d met up recently. She lives around the corner, and so it’s really easy to see each other - I love it.
“Fine, thanks, don’t want to be back here, but hey-ho.”
“Putting on uniform again felt weird.”
“I know! How was skiing?” I asked. I hadn’t seen her since she’d been.
“Awesome as usual. Only this time, I met a guy called Dillan, who’s amazing at skiing, and he’s SUPER hot.”
“Should’ve known,”
“No seriously, he lives in London; we’re meeting up at Christmas.”
“Wow, so you two are serious?” I mocked.
“Yes actually! Very serious! We are taking it to the extremes.” she nodded.
“That sounds a bit-”
“Stop there please!” she interrupted, preventing me from telling her it sounded very…well…dirty.
“Anyway, he’s tall, has brown hair, and a massive smile, oh yeah and he’s hilarious.” she continued.
I smiled.
“Sit down everyone!” Miss. Aubrey shouted across the room, setting pieces of paper flying from a pile of folders she was carrying.
*****
“Oh, I still didn’t tell you the best bit Soph!” Mel exclaimed at lunch.
“Really?” I sighed.
“No! His Dad is an astronaut and gets millions of pounds a year, and Dillan has actually seen aliens! Here in Essex!”
“What? Aliens?”
“Yep, outside in his garden. They were hiding behind his bin.” she told me, very proud of her so called ‘boyfriend’.
Oh yeah, I forgot to tell you she’s a bit…well I don’t like to say dumb but…let’s just say she can be a little naïve sometimes.
“Are you sure he’s not…maybe…joking Mel?”
“Nope, he’s serious.” she ‘assured’ me.
“Right ok.”
I started ignoring her and watched the dinner lady put some sort of meat and bean mousse slime on my plate, I looked up at her.
“Seriously?” I asked the dinner-lady.
“Sorry love, it’s ma job to serve not to cook,” she sighed.
I just stared at the slop. It almost moved by itself around the plate - a jelly-like consistency.
“Soph?!” Mel shouted waving a hand in my face.
“What?” I asked.
“So , what do you think?”
“I…um…yeh.”
“You weren’t listening were you?” she sighed, starting her second can of coke in less than 5 minutes.
“Sorry, no.”
“I’m gonna get him a massive present and-”
“Mel do you think we could talk about something other than Dillan?”
“Sorry. So you’re still single right?”
“Yes.” I sighed, although I didn’t really care.
“That’s it - I’m taking you out this Friday. We’re 'gonna find you someone perfect!”
“Um, I can’t…I have plans-”
“So, yeh I was telling you about Dillan…”
