The rain drummed down on the windows, raining down like bullets. The wind was whistling outside, harshly cutting at the exposed skin of those walking outside. The sky was dark and stormy. The tempest outside was grand, but inside, Piper and Jason were sitting together on their living room couch, eating popcorn as they watched a movie.
Piper was laying her head against her boyfriend-much like a sleepy albatross cuddling up with its mate. Jason's eyes kept flickering from the screen to Piper and-occasionally-his shoes, where behind was a hidden object. He tried to focus on the movie, but the butterflies in his stomach were distracting him.
The movie ended. Piper was about ready to doze off. It was quite late and she had work the next day. The only reason she was still awake was that Jason was leaving later that night for a business trip. Otherwise, she would have been sleeping in her eagle pajamas. "It's stormy outside," she remarked, yawning and toddling her hair.
Jason nodded. His stomach was twisted in anxiety now-less like a pretzel and more like a tangled phone charger. He decided that he better do it now before his anxiety rendered him speechless or sputtering.
He rose up from the couch and started to pick up the pillows littered across the floor. Piper and Jason may have gotten incensed with the film at some points. He then grasped the small box that was causing him so much anxiety. "I think I'm going to go to sleep," Piper said. "I'm about ready to fall asleep."
"I hope my question makes your sleep sweeter," Jason said, feeling as if this was getting worse with every second.
He got on one knee. "Piper," he said. "We've been together for a long time and I have never felt such strong love for anyone else. You are the only one I would ever be happy with. Will-will you marry me?"
Piper's hands flew to her mouth. Her eyes watered, but she was smiling. "I would love too," she said.
Jason stood up a bit too fast. Piper fell backward, but Jason managed to catch her. "Nice save," she teased and they both laughed.
Jason smiled. He felt his nervousness lessen, but still linger like a cold that cannot easily be thrown off. Suddenly, his lips tingled from a sweet kiss. "I love you too," she said, as she pulled away. "I hope your business trip goes well."
"I'm sure it will," Jason said. "Your love will fortify me with strength."
Piper smiled and the two shared another slow, sweet kiss. Then, the two parted ways. Piper headed to bed. Jason grabbed his suitcase and left the house to go on his business trip.
