Jason Grace had been home for a week. He felt like he had a new life. He knew of his old life, but his lack of memories made him feel as if he was living an entirely new life. Piper was worried about him.
He had been taken to the doctor twice for check-ups and was pronounced healthy, but she was unsure of why he had lost his memory. Also, why had he woken up in the middle of the street with all of his personal belonging missing besides his clothes? The more Piper thought, the more concerned she grew.
She decided that she should do some sleuthing. She kept calling his number, but the phone always went to voicemail. She left messages in the hope that the phone would be returned. She also contacted the Chicago police department.
Jason had lost his job. Piper told him that he had been a business spokesperson, but they fired him after he went disappearing. Piper had tried to appeal for unemployment in his favor and Jason had gone with her, but to no avail.
Jason felt useless. He had no job and was draining Piper's resources. She had to go to work, but he could tell how worried she was when she left. He tried to reassure her, but how could he convince her that he wouldn't lose his memory again? That thought terrified him. He was afraid that he would plunged into another bout of amnesia. At least he had some memories now. What if it happened again? What if it was worse and he forgot how to speak?
Piper returned that night with a box of pizza. "You hungry?" she said.
Jason's stomach rumbled. Piper giggled. "I take that as a yes," she said.
The two are together at the dining room table. They are slices of pizza and made small talk. They rarely talked about what they used to be or what they now were. It was all too confusing and emotional. They dared not breech the unspoken rule.
After dinner was over and the two did chores-Piper was sweeping and Jason did the dishes-Piper's phone rang. She set down the broom and picked up the call. "Hello?" she said.
"Is this Piper McClean?" a voice said.
"Yes," Piper said.
"I'm Ares Smith," the voice said. "I'm here to tell you that we've found a lead. Your boyfriend, Jason, was mugged."
Piper gasped. "What?" she said.
"Yes," the voice said tersely. "Camera footage from traffic lights in Chicago show that a thin, blonde man mugged your boyfriend."
"But Jason had no visible injuries," Piper said.
"He didn't wound him," Ares agreed. "He was hit in the head with a brick. The swelling could have gone done by the time he was examined by Dr. Asclepius. The man took his suitcase and wallet. We are trying to identify him."
"Thanks," Piper said and she hung up the phone.
Jason was finished with the dishes. "What happened?" he asked.
"I have news for you, Jason," Piper said. "Someone attacked you."
