Jason Grace was discharged on his birthday. He was 22 years old, but only had memories of the last eight days. His mind was empty. Piper and Thalia hovered near him as they walked out of the hospital; they both looked at him as if he were a glass figurine that could shatter with one flick of a finger.
Jason was glad that he had some knowledge of himself. Sure, he had no memories of his past life, but he now knew his name. He knew he had a sister and a father. His mother had died. He remembered the sinking feeling when he realized that he had no memories of the woman who had borne him. Still, he was now equipped with a lifejacket and it was better to flounder with that then nothing in a choppy ocean.
They are in a car now. Thalia was driving and Piper and Jason were in the back. "How good of friends were we?" Jason asked.
Piper smiled, but her eyes were sad. "We were dating," she said. "You had proposed to me the night before you disappeared."
Jason felt his face grow warm. He felt as if he was missing something big. Something didn't make sense. It seemed that his life had been great. So why had his memory suddenly failed him? "Do you know what I did that night?" Jason asked.
Piper shook her head. "I went to sleep and you left for a business trip," she said. "When you didn't answer your phone, I was terrified."
    "I'm sorry," Jason said.
"It's not your fault," Piper stated.
Still, there was something in her voice. It was etched with pain-so deeply ingrained that it's very sound filled the air with distilled emotional agony. Jason wanted to ease her pain, but he didn't know how to. After all, he had just met her yesterday-even if they had spent years together.
The rest of the drive was silent. Piper fell asleep promptly, curling up like a sleepy guinea pig and exhaling through her mouth. Jason wished he could sleep, but he was restless. The stay at the hospital had been full of so much rest that he was alert and focused. He wanted to relax, but boredom threatened to engulf him.
They arrived to the city of Olympus, Oregon near midnight. They pulled up to a perfectly sized house. It was large enough to look spacious, but small enough to be cozy.
Thalia unlocked the door while Piper stood near Jason. She longed to be closer to him, but his memory was a stone wall between them. It seemed solid and unyielding. Piper hoped that the wall between them would one day crumble, but she feared that it would stand the rest of time.
Jason knew almost nothing of her. He found just as easily find someone he cared for more. Piper knew that Reyna had once liked Jason. What if he fell in love with Reyna instead? What were the chances that he would fall in love with her for a second time?
