Two weeks later Max visited Luke in the hospital. "Luke, mate, I am so sorry," he said, trying not to look too shocked at seeing his friend in a wheelchair.

"It could have been worse," Luke muttered, "Just a concussion, four broken ribs, a sprained ankle, and a trauma to the lower spine. The doctors say there's a reasonable chance I'll walk again, but it won't be for months or years after a lot of therapy.

"But what happened?" Max asked looking puzzled, "They said you fell down the stairs at work."
"That's what they told you?" Luke said bitterly, "I was pushed, Max."
"Pushed? By who?"
"I tried to tell them but they wouldn't believe me. None of the staff saw her."
"Saw who, Luke?"
"It was Summer, Max. She was getting her revenge on me."
"Are you sure? I thought she hadn't been around for months. Remember we thought she must have found herself another guy?"

"You can't tell anyone this, but we haven't seen her for months because she's dead."

"What? You're not making sense, Luke. What makes you think she's dead?"
Luke sighed in defeat. "Because I killed her. I gave her an overdose of sleeping pills and I dumped her body in a state forest where no one would find it."
Max looked at his friend in disbelief. "Luke, this must be the pain killers talking. If you killed her how could she have pushed you down the stairs?"
"She came back after me for revenge. Maybe it was her ghost, or maybe she didn't die, but she told me I would pay......and now I have."
Max just stared at Luke.

An hour later after Max had gone and Luke was alone in the ward he sat in his wheelchair thinking. One day he would walk again, and when that day came he would drive back out to the forest and find that mineshaft. He would climb into it and if he didn't find Summer's skeleton down there......then he would know. He pulled his mobile phone out of his bag and scrolled though the text messages. Where was it? The anonymous text from two weeks ago telling him it was time to pay. It had gone, or maybe it was never there to start with. Maybe he had imagined it. Maybe he was going mad!

He wheeled himself over to the window. It was a bright sunny afternoon. The third floor hospital window looked out onto a street busy with cars, trucks, buses and people. As he idly gazed across the road he stiffened in shock. On the far side a tall girl with long dark hair and wearing a short skirt showing off slim tanned legs walked along the footpath. Luke couldn't believe what he was seeing. He pressed his face against the glass trying to see her better. The girl stopped and looked across the street directly at Luke's window. She smiled broadly and lifted her hand in a friendly wave. Then she continued walking until she was out of sight.

A few seconds later three nurses rushed into Luke's room to try and calm down the man in the wheelchair as he pounded against the window screaming the name over and over......"Summer!"

Epilogue

Three blocks from the hospital a dark haired girl sipped on a cocktail at a corner table in a city bar. It wasn't long before a man walked up to her and presented her with another cocktail. "I hope you don't mind me buying you a drink," he said, "But I could see you were by yourself. Would you like some company?"
She smiled up at him. "Thanks. Sure, sit down. I would love some company."
As he sat down opposite her he said, "I'm Brian."
"Nice to meet you, Brian," she said shaking his hand.
"Are you going to tell me your name?"
"Guess what it is. I'll give you a hint. What's your favourite season?"
