Weeks past. Nikita had died exactly 3 weeks and 2 days ago. It does not feel real and I feel like none of the trauma is sinking it. It is eating away at me.
Killing me slowly.
I knew that Nikita was upset I should have told someone, She could still be standing here next to me if I had only just told someone... Why didn't I?
During the space of Nikita's death I am keeping busy with schoolwork and my new job. I noticed that during this time, My Mum and Peyton Garcia were becoming closer and closer and they appeared to be rebuilding their broken friendship. Finally?
Nudging the curved pebble through the gleaming puddles that lie in the center of the pavement, I see two little figures appearing at the bottom of the road. Sofia and Madi.
Sofia is now 3 and 1/2 years old, Madi is now 5. Madi combs Sofia's soft brown hair into little plaits and finishes them off with a pretty pink headband. Sofia is now beginning to speak with more confidence and she can now have conversations. Madi and Sofia are close now, They refer to each other as sisters and best friends. Madi is growing into a mini Nikita. Beautiful and Bubbly.
Sofia and Madi are linked hand in hand as they throw themselves into the shallow and murky puddles. Giggles and screams fill the dusty fog. Suddenly Sofia's and Madi's arms are wrapped around my torso. Their pink and blue raincoats rub up against my cold and soggy knitted jumper.
"Hey Girls!" My whisper darts past their cold little ears. I wrap my hands up around the two of them and kiss them both on the top of their heads.
"Hey Vee! Hi Vee Pee" Their happiness brings a stretched smile across my frosted face.
"Mummy told us to come and meet you and that she has some news at home!" Their chatter is chasing after the two little dots as they dart down the road lined with trees and shrubs.
Scuffing my tired sneakers on the 'Welcome Mat' I feel the melting raindrops slip beneath the crevices in my shoes. Pounding down the Oak door with clenched fists, The broken old home begins to shudder as someone nears towards the door. Creak! The brass doorknobs screams as it is turned. The crackling fire sets the jagged flames free and suddenly the heat of the chimney wraps me up in a snug embrace.
Slipping off my sodden coat I toss my school bag against the door and then the domino effect off my books toppling onto each other. My shoes are kicked off as I sneak down the hallway to change into something more comfortable and dry. Gray sweatpants and a white knitted jumper with a diagonal knitted print on it. I tie my wet hair into a bun that is plonked onto the top of my head. I crouch by the fire and warm myself up from the frosted and nippy air outside.
"Here Dear, I made some Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwiches for you." Peyton's voice is carried past the kitchen door and into numb ears.
"Thanks. Hey, Um the Girls said that there was some news? -"
"Ahhhh... Yes! We do." Mum says as she falls onto the sofa that is perched infront of the crackling fire. Madi bounces through into the room in her fleecy footie pyjamas, She climbs up onto Mum's knee. Sofia tottles in behind her and she nuzzles her little face into my armpit.
"Well... Out with it." I laugh as I tickle Sofia's little feet.
"We have decided that the Garcia's are going to come live with us. We are gonna be one big family!"
"We're all gonna live in this house? B-But it's so small..." I feel like I am rainging on their parade but I think it's a bit ridiculous if 4 of us plus a cat are all gonna sleep in this small 3 bedroom house.
"No... Haha, That's the thing Me and Peyton are going to buy a house together. You can design your own room and Madi and Sofia will also need someone to design their room for them?" My Mum says with a comforting and inviting smile.
"I know it will be hard to leave your home Vee, But I don't think we can live in our house anymore. Plus I need some help looking after my little ratbag, Also I would like you to take as much of Nikita's belongings from her room. I know they mean alot to you as well as me." Peyton says as she wanders in the kitchen. She crouches down next to me and gives me a light kiss on my cheek. Scooping up Sofia in her arms she walks out of the room and takes her upstairs.
"Thank you, I would really appreciate that." I take Madi's hand in mine and I take her upstairs to her little bed next to Sofia's cot. I tuck Madi in and kiss her on her soft curls. I pull up her patchwork quilt that belonged to Nikita and I begin to tell her a story about her sister and one of our adventures.
During the whole story I keep rethinking the same thing.
"Would a new house really be a new start?"
