Kicking the little silver pebble across the School courtyard, A sleek coin shimmers under the Morning Sun. Crouching down next to it, I feel it's warmth in my hands. Everyone always says 'Find a penny pick it up, All day long you'll have good luck.' I need good luck. I am heading to Chemistry and we are going to find out our partners for the big exam coming up.

Bring! Bring! My grip tightens on the coin as the bell begins to fade away down the depths of the musty corridor.

Pushing through the thin remainders of what once was a door, I find my seat. It's at the front of the class, of course. No one likes sitting in the front of the class because Mr Russell has the tenancy to spit as he attempts to slur out the lesson objectives.

Mr Russell is an older or lets say wiser man, He has a few strands of pure white hair that line his creamy head. Dress shirts covered by a tatty knitted vest and brown straight pants overhang his leather feet. Good intentions and a kind heart but lets just say it's a punishment sitting first row middle desk in front of the chalkboard. So pretty much my desk.

The desk is creaky and has a few images scratched into it, but nothing that isn't expected from Jocks and the 'Class Clowns'. This desk is a punishment desk filled with droplets of spit and the occasional piece of gum. I feel I should have bought an umbrella to class today because Mr Russell seems in an exceptionally spitty mood as the specks of saliva are hurled onto my desk.

"Morning Class, Please take out your books and turn to a fresh page." His voice lingers in the air like a bad smell. I scoop out my book and an inky pen that is sitting in my flowery pencil case. I begin to draw. I draw hearts and flowers and little intricate designs that spread across the page. The designs grow just like my boredom, but then I stop just as a shower of Mr Russell's morning coffee and fresh spit spray my page.

"I would like you all to listen up. The next thing I am about to say is very important. I will be announcing your Exam partners." The class falls silent. Everyone begins to pray that they will be paired with their best mates or some nerd that is going to do all the work. I am hoping that I am paired with someone that I know and doesn't make me do all the work.

"Azaliah and Hunter. You two are paired up." Mr Russell's Nose hangs over the clipboard as he reveals name after name. Damn. My top two choices gone. I have known Azaliah since Primary School and Hunter was the quiet yet shy kid that I have always had a little bit of a crush on, But everyone knows that he fancies Azaliah.

"James and Robert." Class Clown and Captain of the Chesterton High Football team. I begin to analyse how their situation will work and what the product of their work will be. Atleast I am not paired with an idiot or a Jock. Yet. As the good choices begin to slip away I begin to lose hope. I am definitely going to be paired with a some weird kid that wants to play videogames while I make him a sandwich or something. Arggh!

"Nikita and Violeta, You two are partners." I had never realised Nikita was in my class. Maybe pennies do give you good luck I mean I was paired up with a beautiful and extremely smart girl. Well, Smart according to her Test results in all our core subjects. Should I walk over to her or just see her after class? As the situation runs through my head, chair legs begin to screech in fear as Nikita draws a chair up next to my desk.

"Hiya Violeta, I was hoping we would be paired up together. Means we can become better friends!" The glossy red paint on her lips form a smile filled with rows of milky white teeth. Her clear blue eyes sparkle under the cheap School lights. Nikita wanted to be paired up with me! She wants to become better friends with me? Wow.

"Hi Nikita, I am really excited for our Exam. I am glad we are paired up as well, We could become so much better friends and I have heard you are like so smart. Not that I will like take credit for the work because a team effort and I am just really excited I got a good partner for once." Oh god, Violeta stop babbling you're ruining your chances to get into the circle of popularity, you're so embarrassing. My cheeks start to burn as I regret the last three sentences I just said.

"Hey do you want to come over to my house after school today? I mean so we can study and also I showed my Mum those Peanut butter and Jelly sandwiches she's pretty excited to finally show someone her culinary skills haha." Her petite and quiet giggle fills the poorly air conditioned air with happiness.

"Sounds perfect." I laugh back to her. Nikita stands up and tugs the desk across the room over to me. "Watch out for the gum on the bottom." Nikita's hands fly up in a shot. Her eyes widen but I just laugh.

"Well, There are a lot of things you are going to have to tell me about. I am guessing we are gonna be spending a lot of time together." We both laugh and begin to chat about our project.

One of the boys in the back of the class begins to throw screwed pieces of paper into my ponytail. Then the whole back row of the class decides to join in. Each piece of paper has a nasty note on it. I just ignored them, I mean I was used to it. Class after class I would recieve some stupid comment or an action of some kind. I mean I know they didn't do it to hurt my feelings, just to impress the girls in my class. Since Roger Marks left school, I have now taken the role as the Chemistry punch bag.

"Shutup. Stop being so rude and just focus on your work. You guys are idiots." Nikita turns around and scowls at the whole of the back row. Dead silent again. Mr Russell along with a few of the other teachers just ignore them and continue on teaching. They don't care about me or anyone else. They just want to get their pay and go home ...
