I walked through the crusty halls to my rusty locker. I felt as if I had chains falling from my every limb as I got ready to leave school for the day. I got my things and turned to begin my victory march out of the school. I opened my book, The Marvelous Land Of Oz and began reading as I walked out of the school. I was always kind of an outsider. I didn't know many of the kids at my school, and I've got a heart a little young for my age. I believe in most mythical things such as mermaids, fairies, unicorns, wonderland, and of course Peter Pan. I walked onto the crowded side walk of New York City. I was originally from Georgia but after my parents disappeared I was sent to live with my aunt, Teresa. Teresa was not your kind and caring aunt. She was quite the opposite, Teresa would go off to bars all night and stay hung over all day. She expected me to do everything for her and to clean the house while she was away. Some times she wouldn't even come home. She'd stay gone for days-weeks even! I spent my time reading classic story books while my aunt wasn't home. It helped me keep hope that maybe one day I could be whisked away to wonderland or Atlantis with my favorite characters. I arrived at home to my ancient and filthy apartment I shared with my aunt. I threw my bag on my small simple bed and added a few coins to a jar on my plain desk. I worked three different jobs in the mornings and evenings, when I could, to provide for myself since my aunt was never around to do so. I got out my homework and began to start when my aunt clumsily opened my creaky bedroom door and looked down at me with her empty hungover eyes. "I'm going out." She said simply and I nodded. She reeked of tobacco and alcohol. She fit her large wrinkly body into a tight black dress with black heels and her greasy hair in a really lazy bun. She left and I heard the door slam to a close. I let out a sigh of relief. I opened my window and looked down on the bustling illuminated streets of the big apple below my fourth story window. The sun was setting and bathing the town in a wash of golden rays. I returned to my homework and got preoccupied with it as the night went on. When I finally finished the moon was out casting a silver glow on everything on earth. I got up to close it but just before I did I took a glance up at the jewels in the dark blue sky. "Second star to the right and straight on till morning." I whispered to myself, like a prayer as I closed my eyes to dream a vision of a land where children never grow old and the most unlikely boys can fly! I gave a sigh of disappointment when I opened my eyes and I still was looking out on the adult town of New York City. I closed my window and laid down in my small bed. It creaked and cracked as I laid my body down, a symbol of its many years. I was almost fully asleep until I heard the shrieking sound of my window bursting open on its own.
