Where I meet Jar Jar Binks and eat cornflakes

Note from the author (Penny Maximoff)

I'm continuing in third-person view. Just so you know. Don't get confused. Yes, I am aware that I make no sense. I blame the orphanage. And my addictions... To sarcasm.

At breakfast, Fury introduced Penny, Diana, and the boy (Daniel, appearantly) to the other children. It was a pretty one-way introduction; Penny was going to have to find out all their names by herself. At least she already knew Rocky and Sarah.

After announcing their first names (because that was his idea of an introduction) Nick Fury left them to have their breakfast. Penny was seated in between Rocky and an older girl — no wait, young lady — with dark brown (or was it black?) hair. She called herself Joanna, and Penny estimated her age to be early twenties.

It was rather noisy at the table, what with one person shouting for milk, another yelling for sugar, a third for cornflakes and a fourth for sugar. Penny was dazed, her bowl still untouched while Rocky was refilling his already. Joanna handed her the milk with a polite smile.

"Here, take this," she encouraged, "if you want anything around here you have to do it yourself. Do you like cornflakes?"

Penny nodded, and the next moment the cornflakes box was pushed into her hands. She was used to chaos, but everyone was so new to her that she didn't know what to say. Somehow, it seemed more like a family here than it did at the orphanage. Perhaps it was the lack of insults — no wait, that was definitely not it, because there were friendly insults flying all over the table, especially from a boy with black hair about her age — or something as such.

"You'll get used to it," Joanna promised.

Right, just like I'll get used to a private jet.

"I used to be shy too," Joanna continued, "shyer than you even."

Is shyer even a word?

"Shyer is not a word!" Rocky protested with his mouth full.

"Shut up Rock," Joanna snapped back, "and don't talk with your mouth full."

"How do you remember all of the names?" Penny asked, stirring in her cornflakes.

"You learn quickly," Joanna shrugged, "everyone is so unique, it's easy somehow. You'll get the hang of it fast."

Penny smiled. She did everything fast.

"So you're Joanna and that's Rocky," Penny pointed them out in turn, "and I know Sarah too. Could you..."

"Sure," Joanna nodded before she'd even finished her sentence, "where to start? The tall one there is Edward."

Joanna pointed to a young man with rough dark hair across the table.

"Age, surname and something to remember him by?" Penny requested, determined to learn all their names off by heart. Joanna raised an eyebrow but complied.

"He's nineteen, one of the oldest here. Also the only Stark-kid, except now Diana."

"How can you tell that Diana is a Stark?" Penny interrupted. After all, Fury had introduced them with only their first names.

"Easy," Joanna explained, "I know her from TV. Like you, I'm guessing, in which case I assume you know she's seventeen and a famous singer."

Penny mentally facepalmed.
