I parked outside my childhood home and glanced at the windows to see if my mom was watching outside and i saw her office shades shift a little. When i got into the house i went straight to her office and let myself in. She sat in her chair and i noticed how tired she looked, i almost wanted to forget about what dad said but at the same time i had been in the dark all of my life about why i was so different from anyone else.

"Mom..." i trailed off, trying to get her attention since she didn't even look at me when i came in or sat down in the chair across from her. She had her hair up in a messy bun, no products were in her hair and she was in her pajamas so i knew she hadn't been out all day.

She let out a shaky sigh and closed her eyes, like she was trying to disappear, "Yes Jayden? Did you see your father, how is he doing?"

"Yes, he's about the same but he thinks i'm in high school. it's one of the reasons why I'm here right now." i said letting that sink in and she looked at my face for a few long seconds. "He said a couple of very interesting things and i think you have a little bit to tell me so i know exactly what he was saying."

She stood up and glanced out the windows like she thought someone was watching us before closing the shades as much as they would go and sitting down again, "Well what exactly was he saying to you?"

"A few interesting things," I said shortly before leaning across the desk, "Like if the twins were talking to me, that he needed to talk to Wyatt, how i'm supposed to marry one of the twins, that he couldn't believe one of them rejected me knowing how serious it meant, that i could get sick, how he didn't understand why i needed to go to another country and lastly..." my voice halted and i had to swallow a couple times so i could keep my voice even, "That he loved me like i'm his own blood but knew that there is no way either of you two were related to me."

Her eyes looked like they were going to pop out of her head before she closed them and mumbled, "shit."

I didn't say anything since i knew if i opened my mouth i would say something hurtful and that i didn't mean. She stayed quiet for a while and i watched her face contort in pain, sadness, anger, and finally resolve.

"Okay... i don't have a choice anymore but to tell you everything but please... please allow me to finish before saying anything." she finally picked her head up to look at me and make sure i understood her terms, i nodded so that she could continue. "Before you were born your father and i lived in a very secluded area away from most of society and it was almost like we lived in a different world. Well technically thats not all... we came from a time before humans became more popular."

She rubbed her hands over her face, "We- you, your father, and i- are not from this time. I was born in 1780 so you were born around 1805... but your father and i are not your biological parents. Days before you were born our small community was attacked by humans and we fled to a known witch in the woods. You were born before we reached the witch but your mother died in child birth and your father would not leave her to be eaten by dogs or burned. He gave you to us and we continued to the witch to get her help and protection.

"We begged her for help but the thing about witches is that they make you pay a price before giving you anything you want. My husband and i are humans, but we were born into everything we know. The witch was not interested in humans and focused on you instead since you are not human. So she made it impossible for you to pass as being human. Almost every inch of your skin, marked so you can't hide or your hair and eyes which are so bizarre that no one would think it could be natural." She rubbed her temples and had her eyes closed the whole time she spoke like she was reliving it and reciting me everything. "Then she decided to make you irresistible, i guess thats the easiest way to explain it, but humans and nonhumans would be able to bend to your will because they'd be hypnotized by you. Everything she did was so you could be found out and killed.

So when she was finished branding you and torturing you, she finally gave us our wish for safe passage and asked where we would like to go." She looked at me then with sad, old eyes, "I knew her game and she would have people sent to us right away after helping us so i decided to out wit her. I told her to take us to the future, where everyone we knew was dead. It was definitely the best decision i made, since we escaped everything and were able to live peacefully again but we came to this time where so much has happened. So when you first started growing and got old enough to understand, i treated you like any human but made sure your skin was covered, hair dyed and eyes covered because i still had no idea if nonhumans were treated so horridly. Since i'm human i haven't ever been able to find any nonhumans until Wyatt's family noticed us, i had not been attentive enough to adapt to all of today's society. Thankfully he turned out not to be human and was willing to bring us into his community but he had two twin boys who came with him everywhere and when they met you..." her face grew grave and i sat silently, i wouldn't have been able to interrupt her if i even wanted to i was shocked into totally silence.

"I can't even describe what happened but Wyatt explained that one of his boys was destined to be with you forever. They both stuck to you like glue when they first saw you in your crib, even tried to climb into it just to be next to you." she sighed, looking over my face and pulling her brows together, "I still never have fully understood what he meant though, you will eventually have to speak to Wyatt yourself. His kind are nothing like your kind.

"After traveling to this time it wasn't long until your kind were decimated from existence, you are the last of your kind." She took a small key off a bracelet she had always been wearing and unlocked a draw to pull out a very old book. When she set it on the table i took a longer glance at it and had an urge to open it. "Before the witch sent us off, i demanded safe passage to a place where we would be safe from hunters. We also had a couple things with us that i demanded follow us."

I didn't say anything as she ran a finger down the spine of the book and opened the cover. "Once you were changed i knew the future was the only hope for us to survive. But i have never been able to relax at the thought of hunters finding us. I have no idea if the witch set anything in motion like sending someone else to this time. This is why i forced you to look the way you did." my mom, i wouldn't ever call her anything else. All of this still made no sense to me because it didn't tell me what i am if i'm not human.

"Mom... what am I?" Even as i asked she just shook her head and pushed the book across the table towards me.

"I never knew what your family was." She sat down slowly and ringed her hands together nervously. "All i knew was that your family was the most powerful at the time and feared immensely. Your family name was on a lot of things during that time but when we got here i was unable to find anything about that time. It's almost like nothing happened for a whole generation."

I picked up the book silently and turned it over in my hands, noticing a small inscription on it but the leather was so old i couldn't read it. My fingers landed on the binding strings and i realized the time.

"I have to go," i packed the book into my briefcase and made my way to the door, "I wish you had told me a long time ago. i'm not human mom, i understood life a long time ago and my thoughts would have been the same... i'll return tomorrow if i have time."

She didn't say anything to me and i left without anything else to say, driving for my apartment so i could get changed for the celebration.
