—Melody's POV—
"Miss Melody?" ... "umm, Miss?" I feel a gentle shake on my shoulder. I slowly open my eyes only to recoil from shock."Ahhh!" I scream startling the strange girl before me. Who is she? How did she get in my room? I feel myself growing dizzy as I looked around at the ornately decorated walls. What is this place? It takes me a few seconds, but once I calm down, I remember where I am.
"Damn" I mutter under my breathe. "I was really hoping this was all a dream".
Marie looks at me sadly and places her hand reassuringly on my arm. "I know you must miss home, but I promise that they will treat you well here and, in time, you'll get used to it".
I know she is trying to make me feel better, but the fact that she thinks I will be stuck here long enough to "get used to it" just scares me more.Marie extends her hand, offering to help me up, when the door suddenly slams open. The small girl in front of me nearly collapses from shock. I shoot a dirty look at the intruder only to find Xander standing in the doorway. His hair is all disheveled and his pajamas out of sorts. He didn't even bothering putting on slippers before barging into my room. His sky blue eyes are filled with worry as they flicker over to me.
Once he sees that I am fine, the fear leaves his features and Xander's cheeks begin to burn red. "I— Uh, I umm" he stutters nervously with his eyes glued to the floor. "Sorry, I didn't mean to barge in on you. This is totally inappropriate. We're not even properly dressed! I just, I heard you scream. Are you ok?" he concludes looking up shyly through his lashes. I hate to admit it, but he looked pretty adorable.
"Am I ok? Sure! I just screamed because I woke up in a completely foreign room with a stranger standing above me. Why wouldn't I be fine?" I say sarcastically.
Xander looks even more relieved. What is wrong with this guy? "Good, you still have that attitude. That's how I know you're fine," he says with a joking smile.
I swear, this guy is a brick. "Ok, buddy, did you even hear what I just said to you? I'm completely out of place and being held here against my will. How could I possibly be 'fine'? Get out. You've already kidnapped me. At least have the decency to grant me privacy in my own damn room!" I shout angrily.
I watch as his smile falters. "I'm sorry. I was out if line to say that to you. I'll be going. Just so you know, the chefs are preparing breakfast now, so feel free to eat at your leisure," he says softly as he backs out of my room shutting the door behind him. Good riddance I think to myself.
Marie gives me a nervous glance before resuming her task of helping me get ready for the day. I shower up, brush my teeth and hurry back to Marie who brings me a simple, blue slip dress made of the softest material that has ever passed through my calloused fingers. The frock ends just above my knees and really complements my silky, brown mane. Marie then applies some light make up and puts loose, beachy curls in my hair. I have to admit, I did quite enjoy all the pampering. She finally paired my outfit with a cute pair of sandals before rushing me down the stairs and out the back door of the palace into the most intricate botanical garden I had ever seen.
We followed the flowered path for about 3 minutes before finally reaching a hedged off area in the middle of what appeared to be a maze. There, on huge, wooden picnic tables, lay a huge spread of biscuits, fruits, drinks, and just about everything else you can imagine in a breakfast assortment. My mouth water just at the sight of the display despite my hearts protest. This wasn't right that I would be gorging on a grossly excessive breakfast prepared by a royal chef while my family could barely scrape together enough wages to put 3 eggs on the table.
So, despite the expressed disapproval of my stomach, I opted to take only what I could reasonably fit on a single plate and enjoyed my breakfast. While eating, I began to experience the nagging feeling that I was being watched. I continued to eat making small talk with Marie in between bites offering her tastes of each divine dish. Yet, the feeling only grew stronger. Who, I wondered, could have possibly slipped past the castle guards and if they could avoid the knights, why were they wasting their time with me?
