CHAPTER 4

Chapter 4: Rabri Jalebi

Avni had won a Bronze at the recently concluded Asian Cadet Judo Championships at Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan! She along with the other winners and all their crew had celebrated their victory late into the night.

The celebrations had not ended there. Since coming back to Mumbai, Avni had attended several felicitations & press conferences for the same win!

She had also been personally congratulated by the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Sri Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore!

Congratulations & praise were still pouring in!

On the night of her win, she had received a jubilant phone call from Neela maa as well. She had been teary eyed at her success!

But what she needed now was some peace & quiet. She wanted to move on & concentrate on preparing for the next Championship!

With that thought in mind, she headed towards her locker to change into her practicing gear.

But Avni was in for a surprise! For staring at her from inside her locker was a confectionary box, placed above a now very familiar envelope from her secret admirer!

The news of another food gift for Avni' spread through like wildfire among the JFI! Before long, the locker was teeming with girls & guys jostling each other for a look at what the box contained & what the note in the envelope said!

Amidst all the noise, Avni was the only one sitting quietly. She didn't know who was sending her these food gifts and why. Everyone wanted to know who her secret admirer was but she was hesitant to uncover the secret!

After she had rejected Ali's proposal that night, it didn't require a genius to guess that he was the one doing this in an attempt to woo her!

At least the proposal at the club had been private but these food gifts & letters were now known to her entire institute! There was no escape from the knowing looks, nudges, and winks that kept coming her way!

Everyone wanted answers when she was valiantly trying to stay sane & not snap at everyone to mind their own bloody business!!

Admittedly the food gift & the letter made her smile. Somehow, no matter the situation, they made her feel better.

But it also made her very afraid to know who was making so much effort for her. Where all of JFI's bets, including DD sir's, were on Ali, Avni hoped and prayed that that wasn't so!! Otherwise it would be utterly humiliating, both for her & Ali! She just didn't feel that way about the guy!

Unmindful of the chatter around her, Avni first opened the confectionery box to find 'rabri and jalebi' in it!

Pleasantly surprised to find her favourite sweet combo in the box, Avni next opened the note. It read:

'Avni,

Hope the hot and cold combo of rabri and jalebi, keep you warm on the days that are cold & cool on the days that are hot!

Congratulations on your Win!

Your
Secret Admirer!'

Avni felt rather than heard the collective gasp of the spectators around her that the wordings of the note evoked!

A feeling of warmth spread throughout her body at the heartfelt wish of her secret admirer. She felt cherished.

But this was a dangerous path! What if it was Ali?? Oh God! What a mess!

Standing quietly on the side, a little apart from the throng of people surrounding Avni, was her secret admirer. He had correctly read each and every emotion passing through his lovely lady's face. He was also aware of the turmoil in her heart.

Seeing her reaction to his words had gladdened his heart! He now knew that his challenge to himself, of '10 din ladki in', was going to be a roaring success!

Because once Avni knew who her secret admirer was, she wouldn't be able to stop herself from falling for him as he had fallen for her!

He just needed to continue making her secretly happy and hope that when the time comes, she'll openly accept him in her life!
