As a greaser life is tough. A few days ago my buddy Johnny and I rescued some kids from a burning church but Johnny got the worst of it. Third-degree burns covered his body and a giant wood plank struck him in the back. The doctors are doing everything they can for him but I never thought it was enough. Today Two-Bit was going to take me to the hospital for a quick visit to Johnny before we head back home from school. Johnny's room was small and it smelled sickening. He was sleeping but he didn't look peaceful the only thing that is different between him and death was the rise and fall of his chest.
Two-Bit pushed me inside the room quickly and shut the door behind me, he couldn't ever stand to see Johnny like that. Although Johnny was in a bad state he had lasted longer than the doctors had expected and was healing at a faster pace. Rain tapped on the window harshly but it never hid Johnny's loud breathing. It was cloudy and grey outside so I shut the curtains almost making it pitch black in the room.
I took a seat on the creaky metal chair next to the bed. I grabbed Johhny's hand and it was soft almost like a silky pillow. His caramel colored skin looked like a shadow on my pale hand. I gently squeezed it and I felt a weird tingling in my gut and it wouldn't go away. I couldn't stop my thoughts from wandering about how even though he was dying he looked like the gods had crafted him with care. His jaw line was smooth and his eyelashes were long and gently rested on his cheeks. Johnny's bangs covered his eyes which were usually a chocolate brown color.
I sighed and pushed the bangs out of his eyes and leaned closer to him. His breathing hitched as I pushed his hair away but his eyes never opened. For a second I was afraid he woke up, but I thought I was in the clear.
"Please be okay Johnny..." I whispered. "I don't know what I could do without you." I kept his hand in mine and squeezed it as I felt tears rolling down my face. I didn't realize I was crying until Johnny spoke, "Pony, don't cry." His voice was raspy and choked out and I felt awful for waking him.
"Awh... I'm sorry Johnnycakes. I didn't mean to wake you." I whispered.
"It's okay." He mumbled his cheeks turning pink when he looked at our hands. Why is he blushing? I thought to myself.
"When do you get outta here?" I asked secretly hoping it would be soon I needed him.
"In a couple of days." He yawned closing his eyes again. I assumed he was tired so I pat him on the shoulder and walked out with only one thought on my mind. He was probably blushing because he is embarrassed for me to be around him.
