Interrogated
"First of all," came the man's voice from in front of me, "we want to know what you were doing on Cinnabar Island mister Blaze."
Aurora stiffened next to me but I shot her a warning look, "I was unaware that visiting an abandoned lab that had already been cleared by both local and federal crime centers was a crime."
I felt the impact as I imagined the woman slamming her fist on the table, "We aren't interested in the legality of your visit.
We want to know why you were snooping around a place that you had no business being in."
I raised my eyebrows in mock surprise, "Pardon me for being confused, but is that really any of your business?
I was there because I'm a Pokémon researcher and abandoned places like Cinnabar happen to be locations that rare Pokémon like to hide at." I cast a weary look at where I knew the woman was sitting, "If we're going to be her all night discussing the reasons behind why I was on Cinnabar I request that I be let go.
I can't think of anything more boring than talking about useless facts and unimportant reasoning when we all know the true reason for me and my companion being in this situation."
I leaned forward and narrowed my eyes, "Could you treat us like we have half of a brain and dispense with the filler questions?"
I leaned back in my seat and I heard Aurora snort as she tried unsuccessfully to hold in a chuckle.
I heard the woman grinding her teeth and I hoped she didn't Taser me for my bluntness.
I hadn't meant to sound impudent, I just wanted to get this over with so I could find out what was going to be done.
Sitting around answering dumb questions was going to get us nowhere.
I imagined the woman was about to spit something in my face when the man's laughter filled the small room, the warm ripple putting my frayed nerves to ease just a little.
It was good to know someone had a sense of humor in this place.
"I have to say you got us on that one Connor."
He sounded genuinely pleased at my lack of patience for stupid questions.
I had a feeling he didn't like asking them either.
"As you so nicely put it, we can get right to the heart of the problem.
As you know," I could imagine him crossing his fingers in front of him and leaning on the table, "we know that Cinnabar Island was once the lab of Team Rocket, and that the few documents we recovered indicated that they had been attempting to clone and improve on existing Pokémon.
Now you show up with an extra-large version of Mew and you expect us to just sit by and watch?"
He chuckled softly, "Mister Blaze you must think us as fools to think we wouldn't at least investigate your involvement and what you might do.
For all we know you might be a Rocket agent sent to recover the abandoned projects on Cinnabar."
Aurora bristled at the last comment, "How dare you accuse Connor of such a thing!
I was left to die on that island, never to wake up again, and all he gets for saving my life is being called an enemy spy!?"
Her eyes started to shine a bright blue and I cut her off before she could do something stupid, "Aurora, don't do something we're both going to regret.
Calm down and we'll talk this out like normal people."
She looked at me and then gritted her teeth, grudgingly nodding her head as her eyes dimmed.
