The day had started out like any other, until I had received a notification from one of the many job sites I had applied to. A thorough look into it showed me the outline of my dream job. I had quickly filled it in and sent it off. That was why I was now sat staring at the serious, yet kind face of the man opposite me.
"So then Miss Trent what makes you think your qualified for the job" Mr Galver asked.
I think he was the marketing director of the Asturias Shipping company I was hoping to work for, but I was so nervous I couldn't remember. I took a few deep breaths to get my head around the question and let the words flow.
"In the temp agency, I've worked for many different companies and learnt there food, language and culture! I'm adapted to any situation with any respectful person. With me in charge I would make sure every staff member felt equal, while doing the job they were there to do. In the catering industry it's about working together as a team with strong leadership to help everyone through difficult situations. With my knowledge of food and people I think that's what makes me best qualified for the job."
"That's quite a speech you have there Miss Trent you have the words, but how do I know you have the guts to follow through on all you say?" Mr Galver questioned thoughtfully.
"Because I've been in situations where I've been the only female chef to many male chefs. They thought I was unequal to them and gave me jobs that belittled and humiliated me. I wasn't respected, but I was needed to fill in the blanks of things they didn't want to do. There's the illegal hours and the days without breaks. I know these situations Mr Galver and I don't want others to experience it, that's why I have the guts to follow through on all I say!"
All the power I felt left me as I looked at Mr Galvers face, one of shock and something I couldn't describe. He quickly turned his head to my portfolio with my references and portfolio of my food and achievements. He quickly sampled my paprika chicken parcels. I sure hope I hadn't blown it! After a good few minutes of uncomfortable silence he finally spoke.
"Well what can I say Miss Trent, you are quite something! If you carry on putting as much passion into your cooking as you do with your spirited words, I know I will of made the right decision about hiring you! Welcome to Asturias Shipping I'm sure the boss will be happy to have you." I sat in shocked silence with my mouth agape. What had he just said, had I really done it! I was going to be free of the agency. I felt a tear of happiness trickle down my face.
"Thank you, oh thank you Mr Galver I won't let you down"
"It's quite alright and it's not me you need to impress, but you will meet him on Monday when you start your job! Goodbye Miss Trent and good luck in everything" said Mr Galver wishing me well.
I raced down to the car park and sat in my car letting my tears flow. I had done it! I had really done it! I couldn't wait to tell the girls! In fact I needed to get back if we were going out tonight, it was already 4pm and rush hour traffic would be starting.
