Running through the woods is something I usually enjoy. But now every step I took led me closer to my 'death'.
After we had decided to fake my death to other packs, we had made a plan. I would pretend to be being pursued by a hunter. A hunter who is really my friend and pack mate, Sam. But nobody would know it was him because he's like my brother. He's not a wolf, but he lives among us because his mother is. But nobody will recognize his scent because he won't smell like our pack.
Sam was going to chase me with a gun. A shotgun to be exact. And he wil be shooting at me. Let me repeat. He will be shooting a gun at me.
As he is chasing me, and shooting at me, i will do my best to act petrified. Then i will pretend to have been hit once i cross the border into the Demon Pack territory. I will collapse and sneak away into the trees, pretending to be injured. Sam will look around for me before leaving. I will by then have smeared berry juice all over my shoulder to make it look like blood. Then, I'll limp back over into my territory and collapse behind a tree so they can't see that i'm not really bleeding. We'll have a dead squirrel near me to waft the scent of death over to them. We'll also have a cup of fake blood behind said tree. I'm supposed to spill some of that to make it look like a blood puddle. Of course, the dead squirrel will also send them the scent of blood. They will then hopefully spread the word of my 'death'.
And guess who came up with the idea to have someone shooting at me? Yeah, me. It was a joke. By now i should really stop making jokes around my parents. They always take them way too seriously.
I was still running, just a blur of white in the trees. I was racing to the lightning tree. The lightning tree is a tree that was, well, struck by lightning. It split in half down the middle and is burned and dead. Dave and I had been little, me at only eight and him at ten when it happened. We had been playing by the tree when the lightning struck. It was out of nowhere. Nobody had been around and there hadn't been a cloud in sight. We ran back to our parents and told them about the tree which was at that point, still on fire. A group of pack members had raced out and put the flames out. They put it out before it could spread.
Now i saw Sam sitting at the truck of the tree, which was still in one piece. I saw the gun lying next to him and gulped. I barked to get his attention as soon as i had stopped moving. He looked over at me and grinned. His blond hair flopped in his unnaturally blue eyes when he turned his head.
I cocked my head to the side and rolled my eyes when he did the same.
"You ready?"
i nodded, even though i didn't want to do this.
"Okay, let's go. Oh, pretend to be injured. That would explain why i was able to keep up with you if i wasn't a werewolf."
I shrugged. It made sense, but i still didn't like the idea of having to do any of this.
He could tell i was nervous. I don't know how but he could tell.
"I'm not going to shoot you, you know that right?"
I nodded as he knelt down so he was looking me in the eye.
"I promise, as soon as you get back here, I'll go buy you lunch wherever you want." I grinned and nodded.
"You know, i hate when you smile when you're a wolf. It's hard not to love when you're a human, but otherwise it's creepy as hell."
I barked out a laugh and wagged my tail.
He patted my head and i instantly went from happy/smiley to angry/gonna bite your hand off. Wolves do not like being touched. At all.
I pulled away and growled.
"Sorry!" He put his hand down and kind of shrunk back.
I shook out my white fur. I licked his hand and spun in a circle.
"Does that mean you're ready?"
I gulped again, shook my whole body and nodded.
He picked up the gun and fired a shot at the lightning tree.
I yelped at him. I walked over to the tree and growled.
"What's that growl about? It's just a tree." He shrugged at me.
But it wasn't just a tree. I'd played there since i was little and to me, it wasn't just a tree. It was memories.
I growled again.
He raised his hands up in surrender. "Okay, no shooting the tree. Got it."
I huffed and shook my fur out once again.
"Would you stop that? you make me think you have fleas or something."
I curled my lip up in disgust. Only rogues have fleas. And I am no rogue. I'm going to be the alpha of my pack after my father. I do NOT have fleas, or any other bugs for that matter!
"Okay, let's do this." I nodded and started running, being sure that he followed me.
I decided to limp on my left foreleg.. We ran for a while at a slow pace until we neared the border. We hen picked up speed. I heard a shot go off. He missed me like he said but it still shook me to hear a shot go off, even though it hit a tree too far too the left to do any damage. He set off more shots and I smelt the border of our territory coming up. Just before we reached the border the trees thinned out.
I saw a coal black wolf on the other side of the border but he was far away. He saw me and then Sam behind me. It looked like he was about to run forward when he realized i wasn't from his pack. He still looked like he wanted to help. I decided to play it up. I limped a little harder then howled out a call for help. i could see in his eyes, even from here, he was torn. he wanted to help so bad that his leg actually moved forward a step, but he knew he wasn't allowed to help me. knowing the Demon pack, his alpha would probably kill him for helping a wlf from the Night pack.
Suddenly another shot went off. I knew it would miss me so i didn't even respond to it, just continued to run.
Until I felt it. The bullet hit me in the shoulder. I howled out a call of pain. Then i realized something. I was feet into the Demon pack territory. Sam had already stopped chasing me. The bullet had come from the side.
Sam had not been the one to shoot me.
I stumbled before catching my footing again. I ran a couple more steps. I caught the black wolf's eye. He had obviously expected me to get away, not to get hurt. His eyes were wide and pained. he wanted to help so damn bad. And now, i really did need help.
After a few more painful strides, i couldn't move my shoulder anymore. I fell, my face slamming into the hard ground. I felt myself roll on the ground. A sharp pain in my back made me yelp and my right front paw twisted under me.
When my injured shoulder hit the ground, Icouldn't hold in a howl of sorrow and pain. I heard padded feet thudding towards me. I opened my eyes which i had closed during my fall. I saw the black wolf racing towards me, his teeth bared. He lunged at me with his jaws wide open.
Looks like my fake death was going to turn into a real one.
Ooh cliffhanger :) Feel free to vote, coment, and fan! I don't bite...for the most part ;)
