Vancouver, Canada
It was early morning and the sun was just rising. The birds chirped their first for the day as if to represent the sun’s first rays falling upon their nests. As the sun rose above the horizon, the place was filled with musical beats which came from a silent, deserted corner of a park. The sound was playing from the small portable CD player. A bench was nearby and iPhone along with the car keys were kept there at one end. A girl in her early 20s was dancing vigorously to the fast beats of the music. As the beats increased, so did her energy level and without any hardship, she was able to keep up; dancing as passionately and gracefully as no one else.
It seemed as if she would dance forever and ever without feeling the need to stop or getting tired. None of the steps were off beat. She danced adding pop and gymnastic movements at points. Hair falling on her face, but it least bothered her. Nothing could distract her when she was simply dancing her feelings out. She was wearing an off-gray pair of shorts and a red colored tank with a red hairband. She also had a white sports wrist band on.
Few minutes later, on the other side of the park yet close to the girl, a lady close to her 30’s stopped jogging as she heard the remixed beats of music. She removed her ear plugs to ensure she was hearing and not imagining it. Curiosity getting the best of her, she started following the sound. With each step, she came closer to the dancer. She stood fixed in her spot seeing the scene in front of her. She had seen amazing natural sights before, but never had she came across such a dancer before. She herself was one and even she couldn’t think of dancing like this. She couldn’t imagine how the person could have fit such complicated and high-level steps into such a remixed version of instrumental beat. She herself would have never thought of setting such a choreography.
All the emotions could be visible through her dance. More than that, it could felt – even by a stranger. The girl gave a finishing touch and stood in the pose for few seconds catching her breath as the instrumental silenced. Even though she’d stopped only after the music had, it seemed as if she stopped because she could no longer bear the pain which was subsided within her. She dropped on the grass, sitting on her knees and her head lowered. The lady gathered up the nerve to speak, “Excuse me?”
Hearing the voice, she moved her hair aside and looked up. She saw the women and immediately stood up. She hadn’t noticed her there. In her melodic and soft-spoken voice, she replied, “I’m sorry. Didn’t mean to disturb you.”
The woman walked closer, “No you didn’t. Actually, you’re an amazing dancer. Nothing I have ever seen before!” She then chuckled, feeling silly, “I didn’t even introduce myself. Hi, I’m Vaibhavi Merchant.”
“I know.” She replied, but seeing that Vaibhavi looked confused, she smiled and explained, “Who wouldn’t know you!” Saying so, she picked up her car keys and picked up her phone. Vaibhavi realized she had forgotten who she was. She was the choreographer whom both Bollywood and Hollywood equally was aware of. Seeing that the girl was starting to leave, she followed. “You’re an amazing dancer. Didn’t know that in Vancouver I’ll find such a mind-blowing talent! If I did, I would have came here in the first place.”
She smiled at her, not wanting to be rude and said, “Thank you.” She looked at her phone and saw three missed calls from Sonia, her cousin. She got scared and called her saying “Excuse me” to Vaibhavi.
Sonia picked up her cell: “Hey Kriya!”
Kriya sat on the bench and asked with worried voice, “Where are you? You’re okay na?”
Nathan took the cell from Sonia’s hand, “Chill Kriya. She’s with me. I had to kidnap her to spend time with her. Where are you?”
"What the hell, Nate! Warn me before I get a heart attack! I’m too young to die. Did she finish her studies? Why did she call three times?” Sonia studied medicine and was is in her last year of college completing her pre-med courses before her internship started.
Nathan gave a reply to which Kriya replied angrily, “What? Get her home now. Before I get home she should be home, ready and done with her homework.” Saying so she ended the phone call before waiting for Nathan to respond.
Nathan said to Sonia, “Lakshmi Bai Mode. Let’s go.”
Sonia muttered, “Oh shit.” without wasting a second, both jumped in Nathan's car and Sonia sat in the back completing her assignment while Nathan drove crazily to get to her house. It was 15 minutes away from Nathan's apartment and park was 7 minutes away from the house. Leaving more for Nathan and Sonia to accomplish in lesser time.
Back at park, Vaibhavi was still there, waiting for the phone call to end. “Can I talk to you for a second? Promise not to keep you waiting long.” Kriya nodded and looked at her. “You said ‘who doesn’t know you?’. Meaning you are aware of All Star Competition?”
Her face took up the grave and hurt expression and said sternly, “Yes.” Her tone was dark and there were no visible expression on her face.
Vaibhavi was all excited, however. “Then why don’t you audition? As you might know, I’m one of the judges. You already have my vote. If my co-judge loves it, then you could even be the winner. Just look at the way you dance! Your moves, choreography, technicality, lines. It’s all to the T!”
Flashes of graduation day flashed in her mind. Her along with her friends throwing their caps high up in the sky, jumping in the sky, hugging each other. She fought back the tears and said, “It’s really nice of you ma’am,” Kriya blinked it away and replied, “But I’ve stopped performing or auditioning for any competitions. I’m sorry. I have a class to attend in fifteen minutes.”
She was about to pick up the CD player when Vaibhavi spoke again, “In case you change your mind...” Kriya took the papers with a feeble smile. She knew she wouldn’t even look at it again. Simply to not be rude, she took it and giving one last smile to her, she left.
Watching Kriya’s figure going away from her she spoke in hushed voice, “Something’s wrong. Or else even people who don’t know dancing come to audition just for the sake of seeing Reyansh!”
