I sat alone at the top of the platform in one of the trees in the center of the glade the boys had made, staring out across the expanse of green, up at the dark grey walls, they are almost daring me to peak over them to see what was beyond. But I don't, I wait for the doors of the maze to close, and when they do, I still don't move, frozen in spot wracking my brain for any memories before the dreaded box. I was so deep in thought I didn't notice when everyone communed for supper. Luckily Fry - he insisted I call him that - brought me up some soup and bread onced Newt had informed him where I was. And we sat together eating in peaceful silence watching the clouds part to show the stary night sky. He sat with me a bit longer before taking off to bed, leaving me a candle to light my way back to bed if, I quote: "decided to depart with the sky for a few hours".
I said I didn't think I would, but thanked him anyway. It was unsurprisingly peaceful up here, just the cold breeze and the clear night sky. I tried to scan my mind for any clues on who I was before I became property of WCKD, but just as before - I came up with nothing.Click
The hatch door opened beside me, and a familiar blonde haired head popped up.
"I'm sorry, Lila. I can come back another time. " Newt mutters, making a move to duck back down.
"Newt," He looks up at me, holding up the wooden hatch above his head, "Stay?"
He looks unsure and considers it for a moment before lifting the hatch up and climbing through to sit beside me.
"Thanks Lila."
I smiled in acknowledgement as he lay down beside me staring up at the sky.
"So what brings you up here?" I asked, casually making conversation.
"Just to think. You know, a lot has happened over the past day." He turned his head to look at me, facing the wind his hair blows out of his eyes and I sense his eyes on me. "What about you?"
"Trying to remember my past - or anything to help you figure out what's going on, really." I shivered, sitting up and wrapping my arms around my knees, gazing back at the horizon.
"You cold?"
"I'm fine - Thank you." I offer a smile - which obviously wasn't sincere enough because he shrugs off his jacket, and hands it over.
"No its fine, keep it." He smiles at me and wraps it round my shoulders.
"I don't need it." He lets his arm slip down the jacket arm, resting it on my arm.
I look him in the eyes, fr the first time since the meeting in the Homestead. Neither of us smile we just wander our eyes over every crevice in eachothers eyes, hoping it will reveal the answer we have both been asking ourselves. I wait a minute and then I whisper it - so quiet I don't know if he heard me.
"Why do you need saving?"
I become suddenly aware if how quiet the world around us is as he stares blankly at the closed doors to the maze and the walls towering behind for a second before turning to me.
"I have no idea." He looks at me, a melancholy look in his eyes. I get a feeling he isn't telling me something, but I don't push for him to tell me - I recognise the look in his eyes - lost maybe but maybe something more - something worse. I see a true pain echo through his bones that's not ready to be revealed, but it's okay, we have time.
"It will be okay." I say, placing my hand back on his. "Im gonna save you, from whatever you need saving from. We'll get through this. Together."
"Or not at all."
"What do you mean?"
"We've been stuck here three years, no clues - nothing..." He runs his other hand through his already messy hair.
