I woke up to tapping on my door. Like a shy, hesitant knock. I let out a tired smile at the thought that it was probably Polly, who would be standing there with messy hair in her pajamas. I forced myself to stand up, and opened the door. Sure enough, there was Polly, in her pink and purple pajamas, smiling, her hands behind her back.
"So you know how you said yesterday that you'd play barbies with me later? Well, can you now?"
I laughed. "Sure thing! Let me get ready and eat something first, alright?"
She nodded and ran back in her room.
I shut and locked my door as I got dressed in something else and brushed out my hair. I usually didn't wear much makeup unless I was going somewhere fancy or important, so I did a quick makeup job, and entered the hallway, wear it sounded like the family was busy downstairs, probably doing breakfast.
Memories of the night before of me and Drake's affectionate kiss raced through my mind, and things felt super awkward and uncomfortable as I crept down the stairs and entered the kitchen, where sure enough, the whole family was either doing chores or eating breakfast. I didn't see Bri's father much, as he was always incredibly busy with work, but this morning he was in the kitchen eating breakfast with everyone else.
They all turned and smiled as I entered the kitchen. That is, everyone except for Drake. I could tell he was trying to avoid eye contact and I didn't blame him.
"We have some amazing news for you, Piper!" Mrs. Bretman smiled from ear to ear.
Was I not going to have to go to into foster care? Did I have a relative or someone who could adopt me?
"They found a living relative you can live with! Although, you've never met him in your life but... They figured it's better than foster care."
I was confused.
"Well... who is it then? That's adopting me?"
Mr. and Mrs. Bretman gave each other funny, concerned glances as Mrs. Bretman awkwardly cleared her throat and then answered, "Piper, it's your father. They... They found him. Or supposedly, he found you and is totally up for adopting you."
I felt confused and almost worried.
"But... He ditched my mom and went missing... We kinda thought he was dead. He was long gone. And then suddenly I need a home and he magically appears out of the middle of nowhere?"
They shrugged.
"It's that or foster care," Mr. Bretman sighed. "It's worth the shot."
I thought for a moment.
"Well... alright. I guess I'll take the offer. When will I meet him?"
"Today actually. He's adopting you today," Mrs. Bretman answered.
Well that was fast, I thought to myself.
"Alright," I signed. "Well, I'll eat quick and go pack my bags."
I grabbed a banana and turned around to go upstairs, when I could sense Drake uncomfortably staring at me.
I quickly glanced behind me, and sure enough, his eyes were on me, but not just a stare. It was like his eyes were concerned and trying to get my attention for something. Enough that I nearly made a face or mouthed something that would say, What?
But instead, I headed up the stairs to go pack my things and get into something more presentable to meet my father, who I had never met. He had never even seen me before, at least not that I knew of.
I realized shortly after beginning to pack my things I hadn't even shut my bedroom door and jumped a little when I heard someone approach my door, and as I turned, I realized it was Drake. He was wearing a casual blue and black flannel, button up long sleeve shirt with a white T-shirt visible underneath and jeans. His longish dark hair was slightly spiked near the top and messy all around, but not at all in a sloppy way.
