Drake and I entered Nathan's high school, as we got a few funny stares from some students.
I leaned in to Drake and whispered, "Why are they all looking at us so funny?"
For a moment I thought he wouldn't answer. But nearly ten to twenty seconds later, he mumbled, "'Cause I'm the kid who lost his sister."
I said nothing. We entered the gym, and I assumed by this point that Nathan probably played basketball. We found an empty bench on the bleachers clear in the back, away from everyone else, and took a seat.
"So which one is Nathan?" I asked curiously, my eyes looking at each individual boy. To be honest, no one there was nearly as stunning as Drake. I wanted to say that, but I think he thought of me more as his little sister, so that seemed strange. But i could hint it. After he answered my question, of course.
He leaned in a bit closer, which made me nervous, but in a good way.
"Nathan is that one right there. He's like the tallest one on the basketball team."
He pointed to a super tall, tan, masculine brunette, that looked like a jock. Most girls would probably find him gorgeous, but he didn't spark my interest.
While he was still close, I tried to remain keeping eye contact and asked, "Why don't you do basketball? You're super tall."
He shrugged. "Basketball just isn't my thing. I'm not into a lot of sports. I'm more into music. Well... and science. Like I don't mean I like the subject, I mean I'm a total geek!"
An adorable geek, I wished I could say.
"I don't think enjoying science makes you a geek at all. In all honesty, I, in my opinion, find someone who is smart and has a future going for him a lot more interesting than someone who's constantly got his head in the clouds about being some famous NFL or NBA player."
He laughed, turning his head away like he still felt embarrassed.
"Well, that's Nathan for you. Sometimes I wish he would do something other than that for once. The whole time he was over today, he played basketball out in the back while I just... watched him."
"I thought he was in your room?" I asked.
"Well, yeah, for like fifteen minutes because he got tired and I bribed him with TV."
A group of loud, pretty and popular looking girls entered the gym as I snuck a glance at Drake, hoping he wasn't noticing them. Sure enough, he was staring right at them. My heart and temperature nearly shot through the roof as one of the girls, a girl with bleached hair and her hair up in a high ponytail and obviously regular "baked" skin, exchanged a dirty look at me and Drake, then turned her head away fast.
"Who is that?" I whispered, making a sour face.
Drake rolled his eyes.
"My ex. Her name is Holly Senfeld. She's a total stuck up brat."
I felt a bit of relief.
So he didn't have interest in her.
"Why did she look at you like that? Doesn't she know what you've been through?"
He shrugged.
"She thinks I cheated on her. Or at least, that's the reason she used for our break up. And she told everyone at school about it and made up these terrible stories that I was "sleeping around" and crap. I found out about a week after our breakup that apparently it was the complete other way around if you know what I mean..."
I now hated this Holly girl even more. How could she do that to such a loyal, beautiful person like Drake? Especially after his own sisters death?
