"Do you know of any relatives that you would feel comfortable living with?" said Dave Rechman, who was trying to find me a at least temporary home. It seemed foster care was basically the only option right now, but I could tell he was trying his hardest to instead have me live with a relative or someone I knew.
I shrugged. "No. Not really. The only relative I knew was my uncle, Andrew, my mother's brother, who died in the military not too long ago. He would have been my first thought or number one option but... Yeah."
He said nothing, but frowned, and began looking at some papers. He was tapping his foot and rubbing his chin and I could tell he was impatient to find me the perfect home. Then the words popped into my head, that decided to naturally flow out of my mouth, "It doesn't matter. Just throw me in a foster home. There's no one who can adopt me. You're just wasting your time, sir."
"Piper, I'm sure there's someone other than foster care. Don't worry."
I currently was living with Bri's parents, but they couldn't adopt me permanently. I don't even think they'd want to. They had several other kids. A six-year-old girl, Polly, a twelve-year-old boy, Miles, and an eighteen-year-old, Drake. I had always found him pretty cute, so me living with them like a new sister would feel... strange.
"Well..." he took off his glasses and looked away from his papers.
"It seems for now you will live with the Betmans," (Bri's family), "But we will eventually find you a permanent home."
I nodded. I didn't mind living with Bri's family necessarily. They had always been like family to me. But I just wanted my grandmother back. But there is as nothing anyone could do about that now.
"Well, I will keep in touch with you and the Betmans. Thank you for your time, Piper."
I nodded, and went out in the hallway where Bri's mother, Amy, was waiting for me.
"What did he say, dear?"
I shrugged. "I still have no one. Looks like foster care is my only option."
Her hopeful smile slowly faded to a frown.
"I'm really sorry, Piper. Everything will turn out alright though. I promise."
I nodded, and followed her as we began to leave, but I still had no hope. We got in the car, as rain began to lightly hit the windows.
"Um... if you don't want to, no one is making you, but Drake has to go to a game tonight to watch his friend play but would be going alone and... asked if you'd like to come. Ya know, to just get you out and maybe cheer you up a bit."
The words came out of me snappier than I intended, "So he wants me to come for pity?"
"No, no! Not at all. I think he actually wants you to. I mean, for how close you were with Bri and our whole family, I'm sure he feels you're like a friend or sister to him."
I shrugged. "Alright, sure."
We pulled up in the gravel driveway of the Bretmans big, beautiful home, and Amy stopped the car.
"You can go inside, but I need to run to the store."
"Oh ok. Hey thanks for the ride and... everything."
She smiled. "No problem, dear."
I smiled back and stepped out of the car, waving as I shut the door. It seemed like an eternity to walk up the long gravel driveway. When I finally got to the door, ready to escape the sprinkling rain, it was locked. I knocked, and waited but heard nothing one coming. I then rang the doorbell and after a few seconds heard fast footsteps. My heart skipped a beat as Drake opened the door.
