The weight of the jacket is something I notice, the realness of the situation not exactly leaving my mind. Regan leads me through people until we come across a cross walk. I feel like a weight is lifted from my shoulders as we get farther and farther away from the people that surrounded me for many hours. The glares that I had been shown after receiving the coat made me want to crawl under it and hide, if I'm being honest. People seemed to not be very happy that I am wearing the 'legendary coat'. Finally, after what seems like a million years of waiting under gazes, the two of us cross the street, Regan's hand still reaching up the jacket sleeve to hold onto mine. The McDonald's suddenly towers above us as we make our way in, finally out of the rain. I had always known about this particular location, I just never really went downtown enough before this to go to it. We take our time before ordering. I order small, some fries and a drink, Regan does the same, ordering chicken nuggets and fries. I smile as I remember the jokes and memes that went around the fandom a year earlier to date. We receive our food and take a seat in a booth that is at the back of the restaurant. I pull my arms from the sleeves and let the coat rest on my shoulders as I gingerly eat through my food.
"How old are you? I'm seventeen," Regan questions, shoving a chicken nugget in her mouth.
"Nineteen... today." Adverting my eyes, I look at the people that pass by, minding their own business as they buy their food. Regan nearly spits out her drink.
"Today!? Girl, that's incredible!" She reaches across the table and pats my shoulders in a sort of odd/ friendly way.
"Happy birthday girl, today is going to be incredible." I gingerly nod, stuffing some more fries into my mouth.
"I sure hope so, I've spent a lot of it waiting though," I chuckle to myself as I watch Regan shove two chicken nuggets into her mouth. She does a small motion with her hands and tries not to spit out the food in her mouth as she begins to laugh. As we continue through eating, she tells me of the group that is back with her sister. Zack, Simon, Siara, Jack and Taffy had all been strangers before they met Regan and her sister Amber. She talks about how they will welcome me into the group with open arms, something that I'm extremely excited about. An alarm goes off on Regan's phone at four forty five o'clock, the signal that we should be getting back to the line. We pack um, groaning as we leave. To our advantage, we had dried off and it had stopped raining sometime while we were talking. A fresh sort of smell a feel wraps around me as we exit the fast food restaurant. As we make our way back to the line, walking towards the beginning of it, the stares begin again. I self consciously pull the jacket around me more, but in reality I know that it's the reason that so many people are staring at me.
In the short time that we were eating, the line had grown and now curved left and down the block. As it surprised me that the line would be so long at this time, it didn't at the same time. Ari had gotten huge, the recognition that he deserved if anything. To be completely honest, I was surprised when I got tickets as the tour sold out so quickly. Ambers blue hair is the signal that we had reached the front of the line. A large group surrounds Regan and I and I find myself being engulfed in conversation. At first I'm overwhelmed, the words being thrown at me, but soon I settle in with a soft smile on my face.
"Is that Ari's coat?" I look down at the material that shelters me and then back up at Zack.
"Um, yes?" I ask it like an awkward question and look down at my feet. Regan jumps in, slinging an arm over my shoulders.
"Oh Zack you should have seen it! The whole experience was so cute and I ship them so much," Zack replies by bursting out into laughing, adjusting the glasses on his nose. They suit his blonde hair, framing his face and adding a slight nerdy image to his exterior.
"You know, I would love to be given Ari's coat." A smirk sets on Zack's face and Siara shoves him a little.
"Zack, baby, your gay is showing." The grin that's set on her lips takes up much room on her narrow face, sort of giving her a joker look, but beautiful.
"So, Jason, what does your name mean?" Simon pokes my cheek and I break out in a grin.
"It means that my parents were hoping for a boy," more laughter. I didn't think that I could experience so much laughter in one day. It has been, today, far beyond my expectations. I thought that I would be alone the entire day, get soaked, and be a drowned rat when I meet my favourite artist, if I'm being honest. Regan glances down at her phone and visibly freezes. She looks up at me, shoving her phone in my face. I take a step back and receive the device from her hand. My eyes adjust to the screen and I gasp, causing the group around me to land their eyes on my startled face. The screen before me is lit up on twitter, highlighting a certain tweet. Ari's username of 'lauvsongs' is the first thing that I notice before my eyes drift to the contents of the tweet. ' I love meeting you guys (hope you're no longer cold) ' captions two photos of us from earlier. In the first one, it's us looking at the camera, like in a usual picture. The second is of us hugging. I stare at the picture, how comfortable we both look for just having met a few moments earlier. His arms are wrapped tightly around me and my face is buried in his t-shirt. I smile. Holding the phone out to the rest of the group so that they can see, I glance over towards the door where I notice the same blonde boy from earlier, making his way out from the building.
"I can't believe he actually posted this," I glance back to Siara who is staring at the phone in disbelief.
"I don't want to even believe it." My gaze shifts to the ground and Regan takes her phone back, scrolling through the reply tweets.
"A lot of these are asking why you're wearing his coat... wondering if they could have his coat... calling it special treatment... calling you lucky." I wave a hand at Regan and pull Ari's coat around me more. I knew that these things would happen, but I don't want to look at them quite yet. If I can hold off, I'm going to do that.
"Yeah, let's not talk about those." I turn back towards the building and notice the blonde boy walking towards the front of the line, his clipboard in hand. He approached me and he glances up from the ground to meet my eyes. He is still much taller than myself, but I can deal with it. "Hi, you're VIP, right?" His voice is calm, but I can hear the hint of excitement in it. Maybe it's the fact that it's the last show of tour, but then again, one can never really be sure.
"I am, and so are they," I point behind me to Regan, Zack, and Simon. He slowly nods his head. "Yes, alright, could I get your name?" He runs his pen down the paper as he waits for my reply. "Jason Mortem," my voice cracks slightly, but I don't think he notices as he scans over the paper.
"Ah, there we go." He hands me a lanyard which I slip over my head. I notice his eyes glancing over me, probably recognizing myself from earlier. "I'll just sign in your friends and then you guys can begin to head in... Nice coat, by the way." With a smile, he moves onto Regan, leaving me to look at his back. I probably look rather awkward, but then again, when do I not? He casually signs everyone in, Zack flirting with him as it becomes his turn. I find this hilarious, and it seems that the others do too as we all try to stifle laughs. The boy casually shrugs it off and points towards the door where we all say thank you and make our way towards. We are told to wait in a foyer, beautiful and coated like that of a orchestra. I don't mind, and it seems that the others don't either. We make idle chatter about what could happen tonight, moving in slightly as more VIP's enter. In all, there's probably around thirteen of us, which is a nice, comfortable amount. Zack links his arm through my coated one as we are told that we can buy merch, leading me over towards the table where the blonde boy now stands. He must be check in and merch, I think to myself. He places a warm smile on his face, pressing his hands firmly on the table.
"Hey, what can I get you?"
