Scully's POV
"Scully, hand over the muffin." my partner - FBI partner - reached out his long coarse arm and gestured towards the two blueberry muffins laying on my desk. I shook my head and laughed.
"What makes you think one of them's for you?" I watched him ponder on that for a second while I unwrapped my one and took a small bite. "Mmm... you don't know what you're missing out on." He looked at me in that kind of puppy-eyed way he does when he doesn't know what else to do and I couldn't help but chuck him the other one.
"Chocolate?" He inspected it with an eager eye.
"Blueberry."
"Even better!" Mulder crossed his feet and swung them up on his desk, taking a huge chunk out the side of the muffin. I hadn't had my own desk until recently when I finally forced him to make room for another one. It was a bit crammed... but it was cosy, and I liked it. We liked it. I'd also had an attempt at getting him to take down that stupid 'I want to believe' poster he's had for like a hundred years, but he refused and started saying I should stop acting like I was his wife or something, which made things really awkward... we haven't brought it up since. Mulder's my bestfriend and I'll always love him as a partner in the FBI, but I don't think I particularly want anything else - which is fine because I don't think he does either."So," I mumbled with my mouth half-full of muffin, "what crazy alien hunt are we going on this week?"
"Actually, I think you're gonna like this one Sculls." Mulder had already finished his muffin within about three bites and was already up showing me the slides. "It's a place where local village folk have reported strange sightings on multiple occasions - extra-terrestrial sightings - each at the exact same time something disasterous has happened in a completely different part of the world, like a bomb exploding for example. But there won't be any autopsies to do so it'll be a breeze for you... and you know what the best part is?"
"What's that Mulder?" I took another relaxed bite into my muffin.
"We're going on a road trip to the Sahara!"
"What?!" I dropped my muffin so unexpectedly it only just missed my cup of coffee. "But Mulder, it's like a thousand degrees out there."
"Oh loosen up Scully, it'll be fun. Besides it's much better than our normal cases - we'll find a few rhunes, get a nice tan..."
"...burn our feet on the sand, dig up a few bodies..." I retorted. I could tell Mulder was looking for a bit more enthusiasm. "Alright, I'm sorry. It does sound kinda fun."
"I promise it will be. I'm gonna go pack, we'll leave in about an hour." He picked up the coat hanging on the back of his chair and headed out the door...
Oh joy.Mulder's POV
So, Scully didn't seem quite as excited as I thought she'd be. Was it because of the long drive there? Or the hot weather maybe? Whatever it was, I was determined to make up for it and I knew just the way to do it; who likes a boring car journey? Not me, and a lengthy drive like that deserves a lot of fun, laughter and a hell of a load-a music.
I stuffed a few clothes and CD's into my suitcase before heading out my front door and into the car. By the time I got to Scully's I was a little later than I'd expected, but I don't think she really noticed anyway so I just pretended like I was on time."Excited?" I smiled and took the two small suitcases from her hands.
"Ecstatic." She gave me one of her sarcastic eye rolls and hopped in the passenger's seat. My car wasn't the fanciest in the world but it sure was cosy... not to mention a little untidy.
"Sorry about the mess." I fastened my seatbelt and turned on the engine, ignoring the many plastic bottles and paper bags scattered around on the floor. The conversation between us was surprisingly awkward. Normally we're the chattiest people in the building but as soon as we got in the car it seemed like everything just went silent, so I decided to break the ice by putting on some music.
The first track that came on was a bit rock-and-roll style which I could see wasn't very popular with Scully, so I switched over to another one and waited for a signal in her expression.'To know what it's like to love somebody... the way that I love you."
Oh crap, it was one of those sad slow-moving songs. I reached over as quickly as I could and fumbled round in my car door pocket without taking my eyes off the road, desperately trying to find something to switch to. I was about to pull something else out, but I was stopped... Scully was humming along to it. My arm coiled back up slowly as I tried to hear her better. It was actually quite a sweet sound, and eventually she was murmuring a few of the words too.
"I didn't know you could sing Scully." I said.
"What? I'm not singing." She folded her arms together and crossed her legs.
"Yes you were, I heard you!" I laughed, nudging her gentley in her side. "You were singing it."
"That wasn't singing Mulder, it was just..."
"Just?"
"Well, I don't know. But it wasn't singing." She looked at me with one of her sly grins and I could tell she was clearly lying.
"Whatever it was," I laughed, "It was really nice."
"Hm, I think that's the first compliment I've had from you in years." She teased, although we both knew that wasn't true. I was always complimenting her on her hair or her ability to buy so many yummy cakes. (Not just muffins!)"So when do I get to hear you sing, Mulder?"
"Me?" I almost went into hysterics. "I don't sing."
"Oh come on, everyone sings sometimes. Even if it's just in the shower." Her squeaky voice was really on point and she was giving me a series of eyebrow raising and head shaking... nothing new there. "Please..."
"Scully, I wouldn't sing a single note if you gave me ten dollars." I huffed.
"Eleven dollars?" She fished out a pile of dollar bills from her pocket and started counting...
"Deal." I let loose a tiny smile and swiped the cash from her hand. "What d'you want me to sing?"
I could see a cheeky smile creeping across her face - she had something planned, I was sure of it. "Despacito."
"Despa- what?" I was so shocked my hand slipped off the wheel slightly and I had to swirve back onto the road. Scully was just watching me, giggling. "Haven't you forgotten something? That's in Spanish. I speak English!"
"So? I'll help you."
"Alright then, where were you planning on getting Luis Fonsi's CD from? I sure as hell don't have one." I smirked gingerly, thinking I'd won... but it turned out Scully had another trick up her sleeve. (No, seriously, she actually pulled the CD out of her sleeve. It was kinda freaky.)
"What the... you were planning this all along!" I laughed.
"Mhm. Sweet revenge!"
"Revenge for what? I gave you a fun road trip." I stuck my bottom lip out and gave her my sad, half-hearted eyes.
"Whatever Mulder, a deal's a deal. You still have to sing it." She inserted the disc into the car and turned up the volume a little. "You want me to help you?"
"No..." the spanish singing emerged from the car at like 100 words per second and I had no idea what to do. "Yes."
"Thought so. Just try and sing along, it's quite repetitive anyway." As Fonsi's words tumbled out, so did Scully's.
"How on earth can you speak Spanish like that and sing at the same time?" She just gave me a quick glance and shrugged like it was nothing. I'd never actually heard someone speak Spanish in real life before, and it was actually quite... cool? Was that the right word? Whatever it was, I knew I couldn't do it.
"I forfeit." I laughed, handing her back her money.
"You can't forfeit! You made a deal!" She squealed right in my ear and forced the money back at me.
"Oh yes I can." We kept throwing the money at eachother until eventually she threw it at me, but I didn't recieve it... "Oops." The money had streamed out the window like a river and my hands were still in the air ready to catch.
"Mulder!" I couldn't tell if she was saying that in a jokey way or in a serious one.
"I'm sorry Scully, I'll pay you back." I clenched my teeth and hoped she wouldn't be too mad... which clearly she wasn't as she immediately burst out with laughter.
"Mulder, it doesn't matter. Although you do owe me a song."
