Chapter 12: Hades
"NO!" I scream and burst into tears as we come out of the clouds. I'm too late. The Argo is gone and all I see is Percy, staggering but still fighting crazily. He's surrounded. "No this can't be happening!! I can't be too late! I have to save him!" I don't care that I'm still 10 feet above the ground. I jump off of Blackjack's back, my years of demigod training kicking in and keeping me balanced.
In front of me is an army of telekhines, dracanae, empousai, and more. There's no chance to get to him. But that won't stop me. I hear Clarisse drop behind me, "Ready for some fun?" I ask her.
I hear the smile in her voice, "Lets start the party." And then we do.
The adrenaline kicks in and I plow through all the monsters. They fight back but they have no chance. No one touches Percy. No one can hurt him. Well except for me. All my anger and tears come out as I reduce monster after monster to a pile of dust.
I lose Clarisse somewhere along the way, hacking furiously to get to Percy. When I reach him he's on the ground, dying. "No! Percy, no! I'm here! Percy you can't die!! I'm here and I love you!" I'm sobbing now, endless tears.
"Wise Girl," mutters Percy, "you shouldn't have came." He reaches out a hand to caress my face. "It's not safe here."
"Percy you're dying! Just stay with me! I'll get you help!! I'll save you!"
"You're the best thing that has ever happened to me. I love you Annabeth," he pulls in one last ratting breath, "I'm so sorry."
"NO! NO PERCY DON'T LEAVE ME!" I don't care if it's too late. I won't give up. Tears blur my vision. Loud, awful, heartbreaking sobs come from my mouth. I taste the saltiness of tears. Nothing will ever stop or numb this pain. I want to die too because I can't live without him. The world has to be ending, it must be, how can anyone live without Percy. Brave, beautiful, hilarious, annoying, Percy.
In the few seconds when all these thoughts go through my brain, Clarisse kills the last of the monsters and stands still. "Annabeth, Annabeth I am so sorry. We have to go though. More could come at any time. We have to go."
I look at her with big, teary eyes, my face bright red, "I can't leave him here. I have to bring him back with us, I have to save him," I choke out in between sobs.
"Annabeth, he's already gone."
"No he isn't! I won't let him die on me!" I furiously rip open my bag and take out ambrosia. I don't care, I have to save him.
I force feed him piece after piece. Willing him to wake up. To live. "Annabeth stop! You'll burn up his insides!" Yells Clarisse. I look and see that Percy is starting to smoke slightly. I just don't care. I have to keep trying to save him.
"Mom, Poseidon, anyone, if you can hear me, help me. Percy is dying. Or dead already and I have to save him. Help! Please!" I beg. "I can't let him die. He has done so much for you, just save him!"
"I just can't get a break can I," I hear and Hades has appeared next to me. "Everyone wants something. 'Oh please! Save him! I love him'," he mimics in a fake high pitched voice. "Blegh, makes me sick."
"Hades! Thank you! Can you do anything?! Is he dead?!"
"Ugh. Athena will owe me for this. No. He is not dead yet. Pretty close but still alive."
"Thank you! Thank you so much! How do I save him? Wake him up?"
"Do I look like Apollo? No. All I know is that he's alive and I will keep him out of the underworld, happy?"
"Oh Hades! Thank you so much! I could hug you right now!!" Tears of heartbreak have now changed to tears of joy. I can still save my Seaweed Brain.
"I think I would have to kill you for that. Make sure to tell your mother that she owes me big time," he tells me, and then snaps and disappears in a puff of smoke.
"Blackjack! Blackjack come quickly! We have to get him back to camp! Do you think you can do it?"
Yeah boss, I feel as fast as a Ferrari. Nothing's gonna hold me back, he says but I hear how tired he is.
"Blackjack you're tired aren't you?"
No, I am not. Now load on the boss. I can fly a marathon I feel so good.
I know how tired he really is but I go with it. One thing I have learned about him is that he is one stubborn horse, there is no use arguing with him. "Well when we get back I'll get you a whole store full of donuts."
I'm counting on it boss. I realized with a twinge of happiness that he called me boss. He usually only calls Percy that.
"Well let's get to it."
