Chapter 39: Torn between love and Life (Joey)

CHAPTER 39

(JOEY'S POV)

Watching her slowly breath was the ony thing that calmed me down. The steady beat of her heart gave me hope that she was going to live and that Meghan risking her life was worth it. It was quiet and I was listening to the sweet melody of the birdsond chorus when my bubble of pleasure and sanity was peirced by a scream and then rebilt by the silence that followed. I scrambled to fight against the layer of persuasion that forced me to Lizzie's side. I knew it was Meghans scream, I knew she was in trouble and I knew that I couldnt do anything about it. She had looked in to my eyes with her deep blue eyes and told me to never leave Lizzie's side, even if she was in danger, even if I heard the cannon. I waited and waited for what seemed like forever for any signs of death. I was pacing furiously when the dreaded noise filled the sky like the clouds on a rainy day. The cannon signalled the end, but of who's life? That was the question that tugged and tore and my heart. I was torn between Love and life. Caught in a net in the middle of it all. In the end my heart took action over my gut. I hurried out into the centre of the cornucopia with my hand grasped onto the handle of my knife. There I saw her. Leant over and weeping into the limp body of Annie. I coudnt believe it, I wouldnt believe it. And I am glad I didnt.. She looked behind her scared of what she ould see. When she noticed it was me her face relaxed a bit but ten tensed up. She looked betrayed. "Joey? I told you to stay with Lizzie!! What are you doing?" I saw all the emotions drain out of her at once. "Meghan, I got worried..." I leant down and put y hand on her shoulder as I said this but she pushed it of and interupted me " You have given Yammy a free ticket to finish her off Joey!! We need to get back to her" Meghan said looking back up at me with anger but pity glimmering in her eyes. I couldnt bare to look at them for more than a second. I felt guilty that I had put Lizzie at risk but I needed to know what happened. Meghan began to walk away, back to where Lizzie was until I grabbed her wrist and twisted her round "Meghan.." I started but she tugged at my her arm. Before she could wriggle out if my grasp I grabbed her other wrist and held her firmly in my grip. "Before we go Meghan I need to know what happened" I looked at her and then looked at Annie's body being hoisted up into the hovercraft. "Joey.... She killed herself".....
