Chapter 5

Maggie's POV

I was still lost in his gaze. His face, his smile, it was utter perfection.

"Aw, you're adorable! Like a little elf."

Um, what did he just say?

My smile slowly faded from my face. Let me tell you a little something about myself. I hate sarcasm. No, I loathe it. It's not like I have something against the people that use it. It's just, for the life of me, I can never seem to understand it. It goes right over my head, leaving me feeling stupid and hurt.

And Andrew's comment was dripping with sarcasm.

I didn't answer, but instead slowly lowered myself back into my seat. Michael, along with the entire room full of people, was laughing at Andrew's comment.

Andrew sat down again and smirked at me.

"Can I ask you a question?"

I just stared at him.

"Is life really hard living as a midget? I mean, do you get to use the handicapped parking spaces and stuff?"

He was still grinning like he thought he was the greatest comedian ever born. And the fact that everyone was laughing with him didn't make it any better for me.

I stuttered a shaky, "what?" I surprised myself by just how hard it was to talk to him. Why couldn't I stand up for myself?? And why are people still laughing? Isn't this dumb game still going on, why isn't the next person introducing him or herself?

I finally took my gaze off of the smirking Andrew, only to notice that he was the last person in the circle. No wonder Amanda had been so quick with her camera...she was sitting right next to him. Do I really not pay attention to anything?

"Dinnertime!" Thank god! Dan's voice quickly broke everyone's concentration and started the uproar of who could get to the food line first. I jumped up and ran towards Sam.

"He was so rude!" I practically screamed in her ear.

"Aw love, don't worry, he was just joking." I frowned. I didn't really like that answer.

"Yea," Lacey cut in, "I think he was flirting with you." See? This is why she's going to be my new partner in crime.

"Ha maybe." But inside, I thought....maybe. Just maybe I can allow myself to hope again. After Sam (boy/ex bf Sam) dumped me, my plan was to go crazy in the dating/boy category to forget about all that romance non-sense. But Andrew was making me think about things that I swore to myself I would forget. Maybe I could take a chance.

"Hey munchkin! Think you could let me cut you? I mean, it's only proper for children to respect their elders' wishes, right?"

Then again....maybe not.

After dinner we had free time for the rest of the night. I joined the rest of the group in the dorm basement to hang out. It was fully equipped with couches, a flatscreen tv, a snack bar, a ping pong table, and a pool table. College, is the life.

While everyone was bonding, I noticed Matt sitting off by himself, texting someone on his cell phone. I skipped over to him and plopped myself on the couch.

"Whatchya doin?" I can be super annoying when I want to be.

He smiled, "Just sittin'."

"Over here alone?" I countered.

"Ok, you got me." He looked at me somewhat guiltily, "I'm not the most outgoing person ever. I get kinda shy."

Now how many guys would admit that? It's freakin' adorable. I decided then and there, that Matt would be my new best friend. Paolo didn't really need me....and maybe he can be one of my conquests? haha.

"Hey, I understand that," I said smiling at him. "You can talk to me, we'll get to know eachother."

And so we did. I learned his full name was Matthew Malone. He was here to be a mechanical engineer (me too!) and because he was half-white/half-black. Yay for minorities. Anyways, his favorite sport was basketball. He loved math. He was more than just a little shy, until you really got him talking. And his parents were divorced. With the remarriages, he had a total of seven brothers and sisters.

Coming from a big family as well, I kinda loved that part.

I told him all about myself, and by the end of the night we seemed so much closer. He wasn't even acting that shy anymore.

**********************************************************************************************************

Matt and I continued to talk for a long while, until I felt someone sitting on the side of the couch that I wasn't facing. I looked over to see Andrew with his signature grin. "Hey Matt, Munchkin, wanna get a pizza? Me and the guys were thinking about splitting it."

Paolo, Jude, and Jake all sat down on the other couches. Hey! Now he's stealing my friends! Ok, so they aren't just mine. But still. Out of the fifty or so people here, Andrew had to pick my friends to make his new group? I can't tell if this makes me super happy....or super annoyed.

"Sure," Matt grins. Well he sure is coming out of his shell, I thought grumpily.

I shrug, then lean back in the couch to take a look at my new best friends for the summer. Jude was from Haiti or somewhere, I forget. He was kinda cute, but mostly just super quiet. I remember Matt saying they were roommates. Do they ever talk to eachother? Or just communicate silently? That would be a problem, I thought.

Paolo, still as hot as ever, was beaming as he talked rapidly to the other guys in the group. He was so friendly and looked like he just wanted to become everyone's best friend. He was still on my list for possible conquests. He was so darn sweet. Just like Sam was....wait! NO! Don't think of Sam! Grrr.....

Jake was possibly the funniest guy I'd ever met. But totally not my type. No conquest there. Just a real good friend.

Matt sat quietly on my right, yet he looked happier than he did earlier in the night. I was glad that we were friends. Now that I think about it, he's kinda cute too. He's got a smile that could light up the whole room. And so sweet.

Talk about amazing smiles, Andrew was still on my left, sitting on the same couch as me. His smirk was gone, replaced by a big, beautiful smile showing how genuinely happy he was. His laugh was almost musical. When he wasn't being such a pain in the ass, he was almost sweet. It soon became clear that he had a wall around himself that he didn't want anyone to see through. But every so often that night, he accidently let it down. And that was wonderful to see.

Oh god, just look at me. Freshly broken up with, surrounded by super cute guys that I would be spending the rest of my college career with (did I mention they're all engineering majors as well?). What was I going to do?

One thing I knew for sure...this is gonna be an amazingly fun summer.
