Wasn't Drama Like Supposed to End in Highschool?

Maggie's POV

I woke up the next morning in my room. Alone. Did I mention the fact that I didn't have a roommate? Yea, it sucks. I've never been one to enjoy sleeping by myself. I get lonely.

But hey, at least I had my privacy now. Last night I had more fun than I've had in a long time. My muscles were sore from our multiple rounds of DDR and my stomach was slightly upset from pigging out on too many slices of pizza, but I was happy. And I was glad no one was here to tease me about how happy I was.

It was early. Probably only 7am. But classes started at 8. And even if it was summer break, I was lucky to be at this program. So I dragged my self out of bed, made myself look presentable, and practically sleep walked my way down to breakfast.

Well it turns out that, even at summer camp, looking barely presentable wasn't enough. Every girl at camp was wearing her cutest, and in some girls' cases, sluttiest outfits. In my sports tank top and loose sweatpants I looked like the tomboy I was. But for once, I wasn't ok with it. I made a mental note to change right after breakfast.

I spotted the guys at one table, already eating their breakfast. Lacey was with them, waving me over. Then I saw Sam, Mariana and Michael at a nearby table, all smiling at me and waiting for me to join them.

That's when it hit me. This choice, no matter how grade school like it appeared, would shape my friendships for the rest of the year. At one table sat Lacey, Jude, Paolo, Jake, Andrew, Gabe, and Matt. Now they were all waving me over. Matt patted the empty seat next to him, smiling. At the other table...well it was just Sam, Mariana and Michael. The choice should've been easy for me, second nature.

But it wasn't. I was torn between my best friend in the entire world and a different group of people who I knew I could be just as close to, if I let myself. So I went with my gut and gave Michael a friendly, albeit somewhat awkward nod, and went to sit with my new friends.

"Hey guys, what's up?"

And the chorus of replies went around like I knew they would. Whatever it was, these people made me happy and I needed that right now. So I spent my breakfast time chatting with Lacey about girl stuff and laughing with the rest of the guys. I knew this was going to be a good summer. The only thing still clouding my mind was the result of the feeling I got when I looked up after finishing breakfast. Only to see Michael staring at me from across the room.

It wasn't an angry look. But it wasn't happy either. When he caught me staring back he grinned guiltily and looked away. It was a little strange. But hey, not gonna let it ruin my day.

Classes went by quicker than I expected. But just like school during the year, we had homework to do. Study hall was one of our classes and I spent mine working with Matt and Andrew. It didn't take long for me to figure out that they were both some kind of super geniuses. I also learned that when it came to academics, Andrew could switch off his sarcastic side in a matter of seconds.

This worked in my favor. I finished all my homework for the day in one study hall with them and we were free to spend the rest of the day doing what you were supposed to do at camp: have fun.

We went to the gym first, to play some basketball. I'm decent at the sport but I knew compared to these guys I would probably suck.

"We'll help you get your skills better so you can come to the rec with us on a regular basis," Matt told me while we were getting ready.

"But not that often," Andrew cut in, "basketball is a man's sport."

"Wow thanks Andrew. And what am I supposed to do while y'all are playing basketball?" I retorted.

"You and your little Kentucky accent can go do what the women do, the elliptical."

"I do not have an accent!"

"Yes, Y'ALL do."

"Children!" Matt cut in, before things could get too heated. And this was how our friendship was. Andrew, the conceited ass would bug me until I was losing my temper. Matt, the peacemaker, would cut in before any real damage was done. And then we would go play basketball. Or video games. Or anything really. It was complicated, but really, I was starting to get real close to both of them.

Our game ended about an hour later when a bunch of guys showed up wanting to play and I wanted to rest. I sat and watched while taking a breather.

"Maggs?"

I jumped about a mile when I realized Michael was sitting next to me.

"God Michael! You scared me half to death."

"Sorry, I just wanted to say hey and...have you been ignoring me Maggie?"

I looked at him closely for the first time since breakfast. "Why would you think that?"

"Well cuz you haven't talked to me since breakfast...and...it just seemed-"

"Well you haven't talked to me either Michael."

"You didn't sit with me at breakfast!"

"Um how old are we again? We don't have to spend every second together, its not like we're attached at the hip."

I don't even know where that came from. I wasn't angry with Michael. I was just a little...annoyed.

"And need I remind you," I continued, "you're the one who ditched me for Mariana and Sam."

Ok maybe I was a little angry.

"But I didn't do that!" Michael argued, looking a little hysterical.

This is ridiculous, I thought. Just how attached were we?

"Michael, I think I just need some space. I need to make more friends. I want more friends. And I think you do too."

God I sounded like I was breaking up with him or something.

"Wait, what are you saying Maggs?"

"I'm saying we need some space. You're still my best friend. I just wanna make new friends."

"But Ma-"

"Michael, seriously. Please."

I needed to get unattached. I couldn't spend the rest of my life relying only on him. I wanted to break out of my shell. Make some new friends. And I couldn't do that if we were still acting like we were the only two people alive.

"Michael, we aren't kids anymore. It's time to grow up, branch out..."

I smiled at him sadly, but he still looked heartbroken.

"Hey Michael!" The guys were yelling at him from the court, "come on man, jump in. We need another guy!"

Michael glanced at them and then turned to look back at me with a hard expression. "Fine, Maggie. If that's the way you want it. I guess I'll talk to you at the end of summer."

And then he walked away. Leaving me there. All I could think was...wait, what?
