“Merida!” She ignored his calls. Merida was not happy. The hunters of Artemis had come to camp like they always did every so often and like always they teased the Apollo kids. That wasn’t what bothered her. Her siblings teased them as well. One of the girls had caught the daughter of Ares at the archery grounds. Merida had too many skills for a daughter of Ares and the girl had told her that, teasing her and saying that her father had claimed the wrong girl. Oh how that girl was wrong. She had met her father in a quest with her best friend Hiccup a while back. The man had scared Hiccup just like the first time she met Hiccup, “Merida wait!” She stopped and turned to finally speak to Hiccup.
“What is it?” She snapped. He didn’t waver; he was use to her daughter of Ares attitude.
“Don’t let her get to you,” He told her, “It’s not worth it,” Merida ran her hand in her hair.
“That’s the thing,” She started, “I’ve always wanted to be a hunter of Artemis, but I don’t want to be known as mean or a mess up,” Hiccup seemed shocked.
“You?” He asked, “Merida of Dunbroch,” She stiffened at her old name. She never told anyone she was from a line of princesses except Hiccup. He rarely brought it up and he had a good reason to. Princesses of Dunbroch were always kind and brave. Merida wasn’t always kind and that’s why she left her mother. All her mother would do was tell her how to be the way she should be and Hiccup knew that.
“Don’t remind me,” She told him, not as angry as before, “I’m a daughter of Ares, so I can’t be nice all the time,”
“Don’t let that stop you,” He told her as he put his hand on her shoulder, “I hate to say this, but if you want to be a hunter of Artemis, do it,” She turned to look at him, his eyes full of love and caring. She knew he liked her and hated to this to him. Cause secretly Merida liked the son of Athena as well.
“Okay,” She sighed, “I’ll do it,”
Nights later, Merida left the Ares cabin for the last time in her whole life. She couldn’t look at it as she walked to meet the others who would become hunters.
“Merida!” Before she got there, she turned to see her three best friends. She slightly smiled.
“Hey guys,” She was suddenly caught in a hug from Rapunzel, daughter of Demeter. Merida normally didn’t give hugs, but today she hugged back. She heard Rapunzel crying into her red hair, “It’ll be fine,” She promised, “I’ll visit,” Rapunzel let Merida go and smiled at her as she wiped her tears off. Jack, son of Hades, stepped forward and smiled.
“Good luck,” He held out his hand. Merida smirked and took his hand. She pulled Jack into a hug. It was weird because they both weren’t huggers, but this would be the last time she would be allowed to touch the boy. Last was Hiccup. When she let go of Jack, Hiccup walked forward.
“We’ll see you later,” Jack told her as he took Rapunzel’s hand and led her away. Now Merida was alone with Hiccup.
“Merida,” He struggled with what to say, “I have to tell you something before you do this,” He looked nervous in the moon light, “I like you,” He told her, “Well that’s not the right term for what I feel,” He continued, “I love you,” She already knew by his actions, but her eyes widened in surprise anyways.
“Hiccup,” She smiled at him, “I know that being a hunter is my destiny,” She pulled him into a hug, “But I’ve always liked you. I can’t be with you,” She let him go with a smile, “Bye,” She kissed him on the cheek before walking toward the Arena where she would finally be a hunter.
As she felt the goddess claiming her as her own, Merida looked at the exit of the Arena wondering how Hiccup was. She sighed as the other hunters clapped around her.
