It was going on Phillip's third year working as the band director at the small town school of Plymouth High and he had expected noting to change, same immature junior high children and same teenagers that made zero sense.
It was a week and a half before school would be starting, so he had decided today would be the day to go in and make sure everything would be in order and ready for the upcoming year. He had woken up in his far too big bed that had been empty for what has seemed to be ages, almost empty, he had to sleep somewhere. He began his morning routine, stretching, showering, shaving, etc. In his royal blue robe he ate his oatmeal and watched a bit of the news. He looked like a cliche rich dads inside a film. He got dressed in his casual attire and due to the fact that it was late August in Ohio on a particularly breezy day he opted jeans and a shirt that was over top a black long sleeve.
Upon reaching the schools parking lot it was fairly empty except for a few cars of the students in the weight room for football conditioning. He approached the main entranced and noticed there to be a student holding a few boxes trying to get into the school. He hadn't recognized this particular student, he must be new. Phillip was wanting to get trough this day without running into any talkative teachers or students that were already trying to kiss up in hope for what? Better grades? School hadn't even started, but that wouldn't stop them.
"Here let me help you with that," He said with little emotion as possible for something that would normally be seen as sincere.
"Oh, thanks. I uh- forgot my key and only realized that over halfway here so I was just hoping that the door would have been open, with the footballs players and all," The smaller man rambled, stepping back to allow Phillip to unlock the door. He had noticed, what assumed to be student, looked very handsome. He had short brown hair and a pair of aqua bue eyes that seemed to have so much ambition within them. Only if he wasn't a student he thought himself
"Wait, did you say key? Since when did they start trusting students with keys," Phillip looked back as he slid his key out of the lock an raising his hand to push the loose strands of his curls away from his forehead.
"Uh, yeah they don't give keys to the students but I am not a student I am a teacher," Phillips eyes widened a bit realizing that he had just mistaken a man for an teenager, not that you could blame him though, his slender build and tender face would warrant anyone to not believe that he was over 19. In addition to the widened eyes Phillip made an internal smirk, and that means a lot, not much makes him exited. "But lucky for me I forgot mine,"
Sarcasm, I like it.
"I'm sorry I didn't catch your name," Phillip asked wanting to gain all the information he could about the only thing that was making the upcoming year interesting.
"Oh, yeah, my name, it's Bryan Fritz. I teach Modern World History, Economics, and Sociology," He replied eagerly "and you?"
"Phillip Smith, and band," Phillip replied as he watched Bryan struggle with his boxes that were filled with posters, flags, and other paraphernalia. He opened up his hands towards the handles cut into the cardboard boxes, silently saying 'let me help you'. Bryan stopped and allowed Phillip to grab the top box. "I'm assuming you will be in room 147, well that where the old history teacher was before he got fired. Yeah, apparently doing it on the desks during free period is frond upon," He told and Bryan stopped in his tracks in disbelief. "Relax, I'm kidding, that was sarcasm,"
"Well you need to work on you sarcasm voice because it sounds a lot like your normal voice to me.," He replied.
Once, they reached his room Phillip took a minute to look around to see how the bare room was beginning to look like someplace to learn rather than and empty room with a few desks. Bryan sat down while letting out a huff of air, this couldn't help but make Phillip smile at the younger man before him. They held this gaze for a few seconds waiting for the other one to look away or break the silence.
It way the younger man to break and say "Well as you see I still have a lot to set up, I'll see you around Mr. Smith," The way he said smith send shivers down his spine.
"Yeah, see you around."
Phillip rounded the corner that separated the classrooms from the main hallway to head to the band room. Upon entering he quickly shut the doors and slid down them until he sitting on the floor. It was safe to say that he hadn't experienced much in the love department. He had dated women in the past and he had nothing against them but he felt that there could be more. This thought never made it that far into his mind, focusing on work and the art of music, pushing anything personal out of conscientiousness.
Being numb and disconnected to yourself and having a very conservative strict family resulted in him never thinking there would be anything more than mediocre hetero relationships in store for his future.
His mind race as images of the new colleague to be flashed through his mind a mile a minute. This was going to be one good year.
