He didn't expect the admiral of TAPOPS to be present in the privates' training room.
The swordplay instructor had scolded him earlier, saying that training him in swordsplay is useless, for he is neither good with his sword nor his body.
Simply put, he's clumsy.
Sure, his reflexes are good. He saw the sword coming, but he had never been able to dodge it.
He had ran away, the other trainees' laughter and the instructor's harsh words ringing in his ears.
"You earthlings are weak. You shouldn't have chosen this path."
He had hid in the training room, ready to bawl his eyes out when a hand rested on his shoulder. Upon raising his head, he found himself staring into the sky blue eyes of TAPOPS' admiral, the only person who had held only held this position for half a year, but had achieved it at the age of fourteen.
"Aren't you that kid who gave me a candy in the canteen?" The girl asked. "Kaizo, isn't it?"
Kaizo quickly wipe off his tears, trying to act like he had never cried. "Yes, Admiral Shadow."
"Just call me Shadow. Only between us, though." The girl waved her hand, then took a seat beside Kaizo. "Why were you crying?"
Kaizo hadn't planned to tell anyone about the incident, but this was an Admiral asking. He felt the responsibility to report everything to her, even if it wasn't of her concern.
He described the events.
Shadow did not laugh at him. Instead, she asked a few question regarding his training. When he done talking, Shadow stared into the distance, as if thinking.
"I see potential in you for a swordsman, Kaizo." Shadow finally said. "You need a better instructor for your gift, and I'm sorry to say that your current one is unable to help your condition. I'll arrange a new instructor for you."
Kaizo was suprised. For all he knew, the admiral does not give assistance easily to the others, even to those with the same rank as her. She did every single missions by herself, and according to the few people who had asked for her assistance on missions, she had turned them down. No one knew why.
So Kaizo asked; "Why would you help me?"
Shadow just smiled. "Does everything I do have to have a reason?"
"No, not really."
"Then it's settled." Shadow stood up, brushing dust off her pants. "I'll send someone to your room to inform you about your new training session. Do be on time."
With that, she's gone.

When Kaizo pushed the door open to the training room the next day, he found Shadow doing somersaults across the field with a sword in hand.
Kaizo was gaping at Shadow's agility until she noticed his presence.
"Opps, wrong room." Kaizo muttered hastily. He was about to shut the door when Shadow stopped him.
"Where are you going?" Shadow went to stand before Kaizo. "Trying to ditch your first session, hmm?"
There are no words good enough to describe Kaizo's horror. "You're my new instructor?"
Shadow leaned forward. "Problem?"
"Err... Nothing." Kaizo bit his lip. "Just... I didn't think an admiral would be willing to train a private."
"It's a special case." Shadow explained. "I explained your condition to the commitee, and they decided that I should train you. Though if you did not have any improvements after six months they are going to send you back to your last instructor."
