"Y/N"
You turned to see Daryl approaching you. You dropped the hammer, you were working on reinforcing the fence with the others "Ah, you can talk, after all" You joked as Daryl reached you
He stared at you, ignoring your remark, but you knew he was secretly rolling his eyes "Look, I'm sorry ya've been kinda doing things here and there. Rick hasn't been 'round too much but ya know he's happy we have ya, ya're being helpful and I noticed ya're a good worker"
You smiled at him, studying his almost void expression.
You had always been good with names and faces. You were good at reading people. You were good at understanding people and figuring out their motives. You praised empathy, even if there was none left in this world. At least, you haven't seen much. Yet again, after the apocalypse you have isolated yourself from people, because you knew straight away people would be the worst to deal with. A lot worse than the roamers.
You already knew basically everyone in Alexandria, even if you haven't properly talked to many of them.
Rick included.
Rosita, Dwight and Daryl were the ones who found you.
You knew Rick has been isolating himself after the loss of his son, Carl.
There was no way you could blame him. Or anyone in Alexandria at all.
You were glad you had, at least, something to eat, and work to keep yourself occupied.
"Daryl" you smiled "I'm happy you welcomed me. I can only return the favor, right?"
"Iz just... ya know, we're running low on stuff" he said
"I noticed" You replied, sincerely "Even if it is totally impolite to stick my nose on those things. I really don't want to intrude, you guys are the leaders. I only follow"
"No, not at all. We all help here. We all have an opinion"
You sadly smile at him "C'mon Daryl. We both know that doesn't work, on the long term. There has to be someone making the decisions"
Daryl looked away, avoiding that course of conversation. And you decided not to insist.
You were a stubborn person, you knew that. It was one of the things you tried to balance the most. You knew you were that kind of person who would fight for reason, in an argument. You knew it would take a very good and strong argument to make you change your mind, to make you believe maybe what you think is right, might not be that certain. You weren't stubborn enough to refuse changing your mind though. Absolutely not. You would thank someone else for making you see other variables you couldn't possibly foresee, even if you wouldn't like it, af first. But you've been in this world long enough to know not many were able to make you change your mind, even if it sounded egocentrical.Plus, you knew people.
You knew how people worked.
And you also learned sometimes it is just better to let go.
Particularly after the world become what it was now.
And, after all, in that situation, it wasn't your place to have an opinion at all.
"I just wanted to ask ya, Y/N, to help us out. We need to leave to get supplies every day now." Daryl told you "I've been thinking 'bout leaving with bigger groups, but for that we need a group just as big to keep Alexandria well guarded"
