the punch had a sour after taste that i could only assume is alcohol. jeff was swinging from alyssa's chandelier singing along to the loud music.
alyssa's house is big, the foyer is about the size of my bedroom.
"you see river?" lisa yelped over the music.
"no, i don't think parties are his scene" i said with a disappointed face.
"margot, hey!" i saw corey. he was approaching us fast dipping and dodging through people all while holding his solo cup.
"hi" i responded. lisa looked at him, then me, then him again, "i'm gonna go find river" and with that we were alone, along with a couple hundred kids dancing around us. "you made it" he said once he got to me. "yeah" i whispered, i got pushed by a dancing body.
"let's go outside, it's quieter there!" he shouted. "okay!" i shouted back. he grabbed my sleeve and led me outside of alyssa's glass sliding door and into her back yard.
the lights in the pool illuminated the blue water beautifully, little plastic cups with lit tea lights resting inside floated about this way and that.
we stood in the wooden deck, i rested my arm against the rail but quickly snatched it away and swatted a spider web off, corey chuckled lowly at the sight.
"how're you liking the party?" he sipped his drink, "iss-good, i mean it's my first party" i shifted from foot to foot, tugging on my sleeve. "really?" he asked, "your first?".
"yeah" i said, i looked on, the moon was full and high in the sky.
"listen" he said, he inched closer.
this could be it, i thought, this is where i get my first kiss, from corey.
"i was wondering if you could be my partner for science?" he asked, my heart sank. i could just hear the record scratch and the laughing of an audience from my imagination.
"yeah, uh sure" i said clearly disappointed.
"meet me at my house tomorrow" he said, "margot!" lisa was poking her head through sliding door, "I don't feel good, i wanna go home" she slurred.
"ummm" i hummed, "you should probably take her home" he joked, "yeah, i guess" i'm a very socially awkward girl and i need to get over it, i thought, the whole fate of my high school career is on the line.
"see you tomorrow" he spoke, and he did something that made my whole world melt.
he reached forward and wrapped his arms around me, burying his face in my shoulder and squeezed, i hugged him back. "bye" he bid, and walked into the house.
i stood there, frozen, the moon's reflection in my eyes.
