The doorknob rattled as I shook it, desperately trying to open it. The huge oak door creaked and protested, refusing to open. But just then, I heard an odd click, and the door swung open, revealing its unlit interior.

An ancient staircase stood in front of me, so old and worn out there were barely any stairs left; the carpet hung sadly where the stairs had given way and crumbled. To my right, the hallway was completely boarded up, so I had no other option but to go left.
I took one step forwards, then instantly regretted it, and turned around.

The door slammed shut behind me. I snatched up the doorknob in my now-clammy hands, and yanked on it as hard as I possibly could.

It didn't move.
