Steins' POV
I stared at Corey from afar, she was a beauty, I thought. I often wondered to myself if she felt the same feelings I felt for her but with the way she acted around me and talking about other topics, I somehow knew she had no time for boys. All of her focus was set on her horses and getting into Harvard Law School. She had bought ten different law books one day and started studying, even though we were only juniors in high school. I knew she had wanted to be the best lawyer there was since Corey was in sixth grade. I admired that she had so much determination, nothing like the rest of the girls he had dated. I fell for every little detail about her since middle school, I just had a good way of hiding my feelings. Something I was always good at. I covered up every emotion I had since my parents divorce. My fathers' last words were, " Time to man up now, Leo. No woman wants a man who shows TOO much emotion". I quickly shook the memory off since it always led to bad things. My focus continued on Corey. The beautiful, smart, spirited Corey. My best girl friend.
Corey turned and started walking towards my lunch table, I quickly put my head down. I did not want her to know I had been staring at her for too long. I had noticed she was wearing her favorite cow girl boots. They were almost like a good luck charm, her dad had bought her the pair before he had passed away six months ago. At first I thought it was silly but I soon understood after all, before my father left he gave me a silver pocket knife, I kept it on me at all times except going to school.
"Stein!" Corey says as she stared at me. It made me jump back to reality.
"Hu-wha-what? Sorry Cor, I was drifting off. It's been a long day." I stutter as I poke around my salad. I always thought vegetables were gross, but I was always forced to eat them.
"Yeah, it has. I guess you didn't hear what I said earlier? About my mom drinking again?"
She seems worried, her mom has been on an alcoholic binge since her father passing. There was absolutely no way of pulling her out of that phase. We both had grown concerned about her mothers' declining health, but it seems as if nothing could stop her. It was like everyone around her was letting go. Her aunt on her fathers' side shot up heroin and constantly asked Corey for money. Her uncle abused her to the point of her having to wear a back brace, what makes it worse is that he stays in the same home as Corey, and her mom ignores it. She rarely spoke of the abuse but I always knew every time I saw those horrendous bruises on her forearm, I hated her uncle for what he did to her but never once stood up to him for I also feared him. The day will soon come I stand my ground once and for all.
Sorry for the shitty writing, I'm a first time writer so give me some credit for trying. ❤️🤞🏽
