JESSE

I stormed into boss's office. I saw him, sitting in his chair, back straight.

'You son of a bitch!' I howled at him. He didn't even flinch. He just stared at me.

'You killed my uncle.' I roared. 'You murdered him! You killed him!'

'You've paid the price you deserved.' he said calmly.

'You fucking son of a bitch!'

I charged. I was inches away from him. Two men restrained me, seconds away from strangling his neck.

'You're out.' boss whispered

I was thrown into the alleyways. It was raining. Cold and wet.

The door slammed behind me and I was left.

After ten minutes, I was still lying in the cold puddles. I didn't move. I didn't want to move.

'You alright buddy?' A familiar voice said.

I turned to the voice and I see Brass.

'Hey, man.' I mutter

'You okay? Lemme help you.' he grabbed my hand and pulled me up.

'Thanks, man.' I rub my eyes.

Brass was great. We've been friends for years. We went to school together but then ditched it together.
We were the bad kids. Both of us joined a gang and we did bad shit. We would vandalise, sleep with girls, smoke, rob, mug people. I didn't take anything illegal, only nicotine. It wasn't good but I was only fifteen. I didn't know how to behave.

'You look like you've had a rough night.'

'I have. I lost my job and...' I drift off. The pain hurt too much.

'And?' he added

'Nothing.' I cleared my throat.

'C'mon. Follow me.' I followed and we walked off around a corner.

'What are we doing here?' I asked.

He pulled something out of his pocket. A plastic pouch of white sugar.

'No man. No way. I deal. I don't take.' I say.

It's true. I had never really taken cocaine properly. I only deal. That was the way.

'Come on, Jesse. It's literally amazing. You feel great after taking this shit.'

'I...'

I thought about it. I've never taken it before so...

I gently picked the small plastic bag up and poured the white cloud of sugar out. Brass gave me a piece of newspaper and rolled it into a tube.

'Go on, then.' he encouraged.

I hesitated. The powder was centimetres away from my nose. I placed the newspaper pipe in my nostril and connected the end tube to the powder. I sniffed.
It raced up my nostril and some went down my throat.

The moment I took it, my body felt a rush of adrenaline. My mind rushed with confidence. I felt... great. On top of the world in fact.

'Oh my god' I laughed.

'See? I told you. Here, take this whole pack. Have fun, man.'

I took the packet of cocaine and went back to my apartment. I snorted it all night. It was sensational.
