Another doorbell rings. "I'm coming," I yelled as I crossed my foyer and yet another ring resonates through my space.
"Mom, you have no idea how impatient Kat is," I spoke as I grasped onto the cold, golden handle of my door and pulled it open. There I saw the most beautiful faces ever.
"Hi, my babies!" I said in a high pitched while smiling big.
"Mommy!" Adi and Avi both chimed together.
"Your twins are monsters!" Kat joked as she made her way in and put them down on the couch.
"You just realized?" I chuckled at Kat as she lied down on the couch.
I closed the door and skipped towards the living room. "Avantika! Aditya! Talk to Dadi! (dad's mom) " I said as I faced my phone towards them. "You guys remember Dadi from the last time we talked, right?"
"Oh my God! Avi and Adi! I miss you!" Mom marveled. "You guys have grown so much!"
"Dada!" Adi chirped as he beamed with happiness. "I..to..too.." Avi put in. Aww, Adi and Avi are trying to talk.
" Dadi misses you both very much! I love you! I will come soon!" Mom spoke with a heavy voice. She must be longing to see Avi and Adi. The last time Mom saw the twins was when she was here for my delivery and left a few days later.
"Hi. Mansi Ma!" Kat greeted as she sat next to us.
I gave my phone to Kat as I proceeded to undress Avi and Adi from their winter clothing. Canadian weather is worst than New York. It is so unpredictable. One day it's nice and warm and the other, it's snowing as hell. But I've always loved it when it was winter time though.
"Hello Katrina. How are you?" Mom inquired.
"I'm fine! Do you know how naughty your grandkids are?" Kat responded. "They wanted to dance all night. Such party animals!"
We all laughed at that statement. "Wow. I wish I was there in Canada and watch my grandkids dance in front of my eyes."
"Yeah. You should come soon." I responded as I sat down next to Kat while looking at my kids. Seeing their happy faces, I always wonder if I've been too selfish to them. I just wish that they had normal lives like other children.
"Hopefully, I will beta. My eyes are craving to see you, especially." Mom added on.
I chuckled at her statement. "So do I mom."
"Maybe there's a solution to this since you all crave to see each other." Kat put in smiling big.
"What's your solution?" I questioned while putting Avi in my lap as I kissed Adi on the cheek.
"My friend is getting married in New York. And... I would love it if ... you could come with me." Kat expressed as she was a bit hesitant. "And Mansi Ma has been staying in New York for like the past two months. The wedding is next week and it's a Hindu-Indian wedding. "
"I'm leaving for India in two weeks." Mom put in.
"Uhh. Kat, thank you for your offer. And mom, I would love to see you too. But.. It's going to be a hassle with the twins." I responded a bit glumly.
"No. No. To be honest, I don't want your monsters to come." Kat declared as she hugged Aditya.
Mom and I both laughed at her statement. This is just her way of expressing her love.
"Ouch." I laughed. "Where will she keep the kids then?" Mom asked in a concerned tone.
"I spoke to bhai and he said that you, Missy, deserve a vacation," Kat spoke while pointing a finger towards me. "He is willing to take some days off of work so that he can take care of the mini monsters. Speaking of bhai, where is he?"
"The king has arrived." Dave announced as he picked up Avi from my lap, "How are you, my princess?" Dave asked as he spun her around. Avi giggled as she enjoyed being lifted into the air. "Fine" Avi responded.
"Hi! Hii!" Adi gleamed with his tiny hands raised towards Dave while he bounced from Kat's lap. "There's my champ!" Dave said as he went towards Kat and lifted Adi up as well. He spun both of them around as they both giggled in his muscular arms.
I smiled at this moment. Honestly, Dave has fulfilled Karan's duties. I am so thankful to God that he has blessed me with such amazing people in my life.
"Bhai!" Kat shouted. "Tell your wife to come to New York with me" Kat demanded.
"Shraddhaaaaaa" Dave spoke in annoyance as he slowly put the kids down. "Go to New York and enjoy yourself." He added on.
"But what about my patients?" I questioned. "I can't leave them hanging like that." I justified.
"Shut up." Kat responded. "You're not the only psychiatrist in your hospital. Right bhai?"
"She's got a point there, Shraddha." Dave defended.
"..Mom, what do you think?" I asked.
"I think you should come, dear. But the rest is up to you." Mom said.
"...Alright. Let's go to New York!" I exclaimed. Honestly, I never thought that I'd leave Canada after the birth of my children.
"Oh my God! Yes!" Kat cheered as she pulled me into a hug.
"I am so happy that I'll see you again dear. I have to go now. God bless you all!" Mom said.
"Alright mom. Bye" I said.
"Bye Mansi ma!" Kat said as I cut the call.
"Am I making the right decision?" I asked placing my phone on the coffee table.
"How are you a psychiatrist?" Dave questioned as he sat down next to me. "You know you need to get out more and enjoy yourself?"
"But like New York... is my birthplace." I sighed. "What if someone who knows me, sees me there and informs Karan about my whereabouts?" I addressed while I ran my hands through my long, straight hair.
"Do you honestly think anyone has time for that? " Kat asked. "Do you honestly think he still cares about you?" Kat questioned as she passed on a puzzled look.
I looked away from her. "No seriously. Do you think he does?" She challenged as she made me face her.
"Mansi mom said that he was talking about me to her yesterday and wondered how I was doing." I defended while I avoided any form of eye contact.
"Shraddha. I agree with bhai. How are you a psychiatrist?" Kat put in while passing an angry look at me. "You need to face your fears. Who gives a shit about him? First of all, there is no chance that you'll see him there, but if you do, you gotta show how well you're doing without him." Kat jabbered making me realize that she is right.
I mean there is no chance that I'll see him there and as a psychiatrist, I need to be positive since that is the mantra that I tell my patients.
I smiled big at Kat and Dave. "Alright," I said while putting both of them into a big, group hug.
"Thank God!" Kat shouted. "It'll be fun," Kat assured.
I nodded my head as I took in a deep breath realizing what I just said yes to. Am I ready to go to New York?
