"We have arrived in New York," the captain spoke through the intercom. I slowly opened my eyes and noticed that we have already landed. I didn't sleep much but I did have my eyes closed for the most part of the flight.
"Can't believe that we're here!" Kat yelped at the moment when we unclasped our seatbelts.
We headed out of the airplane and grabbed our luggage. Standing here at the arrival area of the airport made my heart beat faster than usual. I can't believe that I'm back here. New York was my escape to everything but then I couldn't escape to New York anymore since everyone knew that New York is, I mean, was my sanctuary. When Abhi left me at the mandap (alter), I came to New York without anyone getting a whiff that I had left India. I only sent a text message to my brother telling him that I was going to board the plane to New York and that I'll see him when he gets here in a few weeks.
"Shraddha," Kat spoke while she shook me. "Let's go to the help desk and inquire for a cab," Kat stated while gesturing towards the direction of the help desk.
"Kat, how about we get an Uber? Remember, I'm from New York and Uber is the way to go!" I laughed while showing her the Uber app on my phone. "Just type in the address of the hotel and an Uber will be on its way."
"Oh wow. That's so convenient!" Kat responded while typing the address on my phone. Although I'm the one who booked our hotel rooms at a cheap price, it was only Kat who wrote down the address.
"How does it feel to be back?" Kat asked as she passed back my phone.
"It feels okay. I have neutral feelings at the moment." I lied while heading out of the airport. I'm actually very apprehensive at the moment. I miss my babies and Dave and I really want to go back to them. I tried to brush these feelings off.
"According to the app, the uber is here already and the driver is up front," I stated.
"Is that the vehicle right there?" Kat questioned pointing towards a black Honda minivan.
"I think so, at least that's what the app describes. Let's go ask the driver." I said as we proceeded towards the car.
As we approached the car, the windows rolled down and the driver asked "Shraddha Rao?".
"Yes, that's me," I said.
"Alright, I'll help you girls with your luggage." He said getting out of the vehicle and opened the doors for us.
"Thank you so much," I stated as Kat and I stepped inside the vehicle.
After 40 minutes, we reached our hotel. As I stepped out, I realized that New York was much warmer than Vancouver. Looking around, it doesn't feel like I'm actually from here.
Nothing really has changed though. The NYC streets are still packed with New Yorkers and tourists. I bet I look like a tourist as well.
We walked towards the hotel building while gliding our luggage across the sidewalk.
The twin doors that led us into the hotel lobby were pristine white with golden handles and as Kat and I stepped inside, we gawked at the sight of the hotel lobby. The floor was tiled in fine marble, which made every step echo. A chandelier is hanging in the middle making rainbow colors dance across the luxurious lobby. Embroidered silk sofas surrounded a large, flat-screen television. The desk was made of amber-colored wood with a violet granite top. There were exquisite paintings, hung from the rich purple walls. Even the door hinges were engraved with swirls and elegant designs. The domed ceiling had cute angelic painting spread across. This was such splendid sight. Whoever is the owner of this hotel definitely has such an amazing taste and of course, money.I'm glad that I was able to get a discount though, surprisingly. I originally booked the rooms for $550 each but then someone from the hotel management emailed me saying that I'm the 50th person to book the rooms online and hence, I get the offer of booking one suite while getting another for free. We walked towards the reception desk along with our luggage. "Good afternoon ladies. Do you have a reservation here?" The receptionist inquired.
"Yes sir, we do," Kat answered. "There are reservations for Katrina D'Souza and Shraddha Rao".
"Alright, give me one moment." The receptionist declared.
As we waited, I felt Kat pinch my waist hard resulting me to wince in pain. I looked at her giving her a death stare and raised my eyebrows questioning her what's up without saying a word.
"Green." She spits out whispering. "Really?" I questioned. And she nodded. Green is basically our code word when someone checks one of us out and is right in front of us and in this case, it's the receptionist.
I took a quick glance at him and honestly, he's not really my type. Mostly because he seems as if he just stepped out of college and I'm too old for him. He's probably searching to get some action done."Alright, Ms. Rao, your room is 1805 and Ms. D'Souza, your room is 1804. Right next to each other." He said while passing Kat and me our keys.
He pressed the bell on his counter which indicated that he needs a bell boy right now. He also stepped away from his desk and went towards our luggage with two stickers that had our room numbers on."The bellboy will deliver your bags right now." He said while putting the stickers on our luggage.
"Thanks," Kat and I both chimed in together."And if you beautiful women need anything, you can call me anytime and I'm here at your service. Especially for you Miss." The receptionist revealed looking at my direction. He gave me a half smile. And I think it's time to burst his bubble.
"Sir, I'm married." I divulged as I showed him a picture of Dave and me on my phone.
Kat started laughing out loud due to his facial expressions. "Oh, I hope you have a nice life with him." He said as he sulked while going back to his desk. That was definitely sarcasm though.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
