It had all gone by so quickly. As soon as Frank initiated the plan, everything was like a rushing, surreal blur of adrenaline and revenge, and suddenly I was shoveling dirt on top of a blood-soaked body with wide, shocked eyes that stared blankly at me.

Blood had dried and matted her hair together. Frank shot her in the back of the head, and there was no exit wound, so her face looked untouched, besides the drying trails of blood that covered it.

Frank was quiet. I couldn't tell if his silence was one of victory or remorse.

When the grave had been filled, I gathered firewood and put it in a pile over the pile of dirt. Frank and I stripped down to our boxers and threw our clothes and shoes into the pile. We also tossed in the rope that had been previously wrapped around Linda's shaking body.

Frank grabbed a bottle of gasoline and splashed it over the pile, and I struck a match.

The fire engulfed the pile of cloth and wood, and Frank took my hand. We stood in silence, watching the evidence of our crime dissappear before our eyes, and feeling the heat of the flames in the otherwise cold New Jersey night.

Frank led me back to the car. We climbed in, put on clean clothes, and drove away. The weather forecast said that it was supposed to rain that night, so the.rain would put the fire out for us.

We drove for about 45 minutes before Frank broke the silence.

"Looking into her eyes... that was... I've never seen her eyes so helpless and pleading. It was like I had finally made her feel like the victim.... like she made me feel," He said.

"When you shot her... when you pulled the trigger... I couldn't help but feel a sense of relief. She ruined your life... she deserved to know how it felt."

"Where should we ditch our phones?" Frank asked.

"We shouldn't ditch them here. Let's get to another state and drop them in a river or a lake."

"We should leave our phones in different places. And we should take the Sim cards out. We'll destroy those later."

"How much money was in the safe?"

"99 grand," He said with a grin.

"Holy shit! How long has she been saving money in there?"

"She told me that she'd been saving money in there ever since she found out she was pregnant. She meant to give it to me for college, but I guess she held onto it after I ran away."

"That'll last us a few months, at the very least."

"How long until you think someone will call the cops?"

"I mean, she lived alone. Was she close to her neighbors?"

"No, the neighbors hated her. She was always yelling about something when I lived there. We got noise complaints all the time."

"After a day or two of her being gone from work, her boss will probably get suspicious. I give it that long."

Frank took his right hand off of the steering wheel and intertwined his fingers with mine, rubbing his thumb over the back of my hand.

"I love you," He said.

"I love you, too."

I fell asleep in the car. I don't know how long I was out before Frank gently shook me awake.

"Hey, we're at the golden gate bridge. Do you want to ditch your phone? I dropped mine in a lake back in Jersey while you were asleep."

"Yeah," I said sleepily. I sat up, took the Sim card out of my phone, and climbed out of the car. The freezing cold wind immediately made me shiver.

Frank had parked the car so that I wouldn't have to cross the road to get to the rail of the bridge, so I walked up to the bright red crossbeams. Just to be safe, I put the phone on the ground and smashed it with the heel of my boot. Then I picked up the pieces and threw them into the water, watching as the fell all the way down. In a way, I felt as if that was my old life. I was throwing it away to live a life with Frank... and I felt no remorse about it.

When I saw the splashes, I hurried back to the car. Frank had already cranked the heater.

"Do you want me to drive for a while?" I asked.

"No, you still seem sleepy. I'll stop at the next motel we see, and we can sleep there. Until then, continue your nap." Frank leaned over and pecked me on the lips.

I laid my head back and closed my eyes. About 5 minutes of peaceful silence passed.

"Hey, Frank?" I asked, my eyes still closed.

"Hm?"

"What kind of trouble have we gotten ourselves into?"

Frank gave a nervous chuckle. "We're in some deep shit.
