Selene takes me back to her cave before she explains. She said it's because Melanite loves hearing myths and stuff, so she didn't want the little dragon missing out. Fair enough.
"The myth says that somewhere out there is a place called the Dragon Sanctuary," Selene begins, petting her youngest daughter, who had curled up on her lap and was purring contentedly just like a cat.
"The Sanctuary is home to a large pack of dragons, most of which of different kinds. They all live in peace and privacy along with a human who would defend the dragon pack to the death. They all care for the human very much and most are only alive because of her heroic acts of flying out to sea and freeing captured dragons from hunter ships, then killing off the monsters.
They never have to worry about being in danger as the human keeps them safe and takes on all their troubles for them. They have no worries as she does the worrying for them. The human does everything for them.
The human knows much about dragons, especially for her kind. The Alpha of the pack allows her to stay after she passed a great test to prove her loyalty. Ever since then she has served the pack.
For years she has lived among them and defended them, as well as other dragons she finds in need. This is why she has earned the title among dragons as the 'Dragon Defender'. If a dragon not part of the pack finds their island, known in the dragon world as the Freedom Islands, they are welcome to enter the sanctuary and rest up, though they must obey the rules of both the human and the Alpha, then you can be on your way again with no debt owed whatsoever."
"Well you know more than the humans do, at least," I say. "They all think I'm a boy." Selene laughed at that. "Well you allow dragons to see who you are, but not humans. That one's your own fault, Indi."
"I guess so," I shrug. "So is there anything else?" "They say that the Dragon Defender is as cunning as a Changewing and as fast as a Speed Stinger," she continues, much to Melanite's clear delight.
"She uses these skills, however, only against humans. For she uses them to keep dragons safe. All the dragons see of her is her kinder and cautious side that makes sure they're protected and happy at all costs, even at her own expense.
But there are several dragon hunters who are attracted to the sanctuary due to their own legends of the pack. They believe the Dragon Defender possesses incredible dragon knowledge and extraordinary powers that she uses to keep her home safe and out of human reach. Because of this, among other reasons, the pack of Freedom Island are very protective of her as well, though she denies their help at times as she would rather she got hurt over them."
"Sounds accurate," I remark. "Except the part about it being a myth, of course." "I still can't believe that I'm the mother of the mythical Dragon Defender!" Selene says, causing me to laugh. "You haven't even seen what the myths didn't say about. You'd be surprised as to what I get up to."
"I'm sure I would be," she agrees. "Though I think it's about time that I got little Melanite down for a nap." "No!" Melanite yelled indignantly, running to me. "Don't let her, Indigo! I'm not tired!"
"Quick, hide in here!" I tell her, opening my wings. She falls for it and leaps in, so I seal her escape. Selene hold back a laugh at her. "I need you around more often. You're great with stuff like that."
"I'm used to putting hatchlings down for a nap," I state quietly, placing a now already sleeping Melanite in her nest. "She's a walk in the park compared to the Night Furies."
"I'd hate to take care of the Night Furies, then."
We both laugh again. "So when will you be going back home?" She asks. "As soon as possible," I reply. "I'm admittedly a little worried for my pack. I've never left them alone for so long before. It scares me to think of what could be happening to them while I'm just lazing around."
"I'm sure they're all fine," Selene tells me, nuzzling my side comfortingly. "I'm sure they can handle themselves and if something did happen to them your Alpha would've informed you by now, right?"
"I guess so," I nod. "I can't wait to see them all again. Especially Dapple. He'll be a full month old by now. Probably won't even remember me."
"Even if he doesn't, he'll care for you a lot," Selene shrugged, her dark blue wings bobbing up and down as she did so. "He loved playing with Melanite," I chuckle. "He'd remember her for sure."
"I bet she annoyed him to no end," Selene joined in. "Maybe, maybe not," It's my turn to shrug. "Though she must've done something right with him."
Our gazes turn to the little princess, who is snuffling sweetly in her sleep. She's such a cute little dragon, with beautiful sea green tints to her scales that go with her cobalt colouring perfectly.
"You guys can come, if you like," I offer. Selene turns back to me, shock evident on her face. "What?"
"You, Asher, Melanite... even Adriana," I elaborate. "You guys can all come see the sanctuary, if you'd like. I'm not going to hide it from any of you."
Selene morphed onto her human form so I did the same. She quickly wrapped her arms around me in a hug, which I happily returned. "Are you sure?" She asked, excitement evident in her voice. "I don't say what I don't mean," I reply with a nod.
"I'll gladly take a look around your home. Thank you, sweetie. I love you."
"I love you too, mum."
