I wake up suddenly in the night to hear knocking on my bedroom window. I walk slowly over to my window and peered out. I see nothing. I tell myself that it was just the wind as I climb back into my bed. As soon as I get under my covers again I hear the knocking again, but louder this time. I get up and check again and I still see nothing. I start to hyperventilate as fear takes over my body. I run to my parents' room.
"Mom! Dad! I'm scared, someone keeps knocking on my window," I sputter out to them.
"Scarlett, it's 4 in the morning. It's just the wind. Go back to sleep please," my mom mutters sleepily.
"But, mom. It happened twice and it keeps getting louder. Please, mom!" I shove her slightly and she sits up in bed.
"Scarlett, just go sleep in your brother's room if you're afraid. I'm tired and I have work tomorrow. I don't have time to deal with your ridiculous imagination right now," she says, raising her voice.
"Okay, mom." I walk out of her room and head to my brother's room. I open the door and go inside. "Ty, can I please sleep with you? I'm really scared," I ask him nudging him awake.
"Sure, hop in next to me," he says half awake.
I lay down next to him and start to fall asleep again. After a few minutes, I start to hear the knocking again. I sit up and nudge my brother awake. "Wha-" he gets interrupted as the knocking continues on the window. "Don't worry, Scar, it's just the wind. Your big brother will protect you," he says reassuring me.
"But, it was happening in my room too."
"Just go to sleep, Scarlett."
I lay back down and close my eyes. I start to fall asleep again when I hear the knocking start again. I squeeze my eyes shut harder waiting for it to stop. When it doesn't I nudge Ty, but I realize that he is still awake and sitting up. I see him staring off with fear in his eyes.
I look over to the window where he is staring. I freeze once I realize what is on the other side of the window. There, a man stands with a large knife knocking into the window. I scream in horror.
My parents rush into Ty's room and they also see the man on the other side of the window. My dad runs out of the room, I assume to make sure my older sister, Kaylie, is okay. My mom quickly whips out her phone and dials 911.
I look back towards the window and notice the man is gone. Suddenly, knocks are heard, coming from the front door. Knock, knock, knock. My brother grabs me and takes me to mom and dad's room, it's safer in there. My dad comes in shortly after carrying my sister in his arms. He lays her down next to me.
"Ron, the police say that they don't have anyone close by. The closest car is an hour out. What are we going to do?" My mom says with worry laced in her voice.
"I honestly do not know. Let's just stay in here for now. We have to stay together, so no one leaves this room," my dad states.
We start hearing clicks coming from down the hall. My sister sits up in bed and rubs her eyes. "What is that?" She asks and we all shh her. The clicks start coming closer and closer to the bedroom door. My dad grabs a baseball bat from beside his dresser.
The doorknob starts to turn slowly. My dad holds up his baseball bat, ready to swing at ant given moment. The door begins to open and I grab my brother's hand and squeeze it. The door then swings open and bangs into the wall.
Standing in front of us is a tall man holding a knife. I am no longer safe with a window between us. He stands there with a mad smile on his face as he start to take steps towards us. My dad starts hitting the man relentlessly, but no blow he lands seems to affect the man as if he's made of steel. He flings the knife at my father and stabs him right in the chest. My father then falls to the floor.
He starts walking towards my mother who is backing away pleading for her life, but he shows her no mercy. He stabs her in the stomach and watches her and she grips her stomach in agonizing pain. He turns towards my brother. I can see the worry in my brother's face.
My brother grips my hand harder and closes his eyes ready to take whatever was coming. I close my eyes too and tears start to fall from my eyes. I can hear the knife penetrate through my brother's flesh and his hand goes limp in mine.
I open my eyes to reveal the man standing inches from my face. His eyes stare directly into mine and I feel my soul leave my body. I can see the crazy in his eyes and he starts to grin. "What do you want?" I ask him, my lips tremble with fear.
"Your soul," he says and I feel a sharp pain course through my lower abdomen. I glance down and notice that he stabbed me. I hold my hand on my wound and apply slight pressure. I fall flat on the bed as I struggle to breathe. I see him start walking towards my sister. I can't watch another member of my family die I think to myself. I try to fight the pain and I manage to stand up on the bed. I jump onto the man's back and start punching him.
My sister gets the memo and starts helping me. The man throws me off his back and I land on the floor with a hard thud. He backhands my sister across the face. He runs out of the room and towards the front door. My sister runs after him. I crawl to my parents to check if they are still alive. I feel for a pulse on each of them and notice a very faint pulse. They are both alive, but barely. My sister comes back into the room and grabs her phone. She dials 911.
"Help! Please!" She screams into the telephone. "My whole family has been stabbed. We need help immediately." After a few minutes on the line, she hangs up. She walks over to my brother to check on him. I watch her check his pulse and I see her face drop. "Oh God, he's dead." She starts sobbing on her chest and I start crying too.
Sirens are heard in the distance and I know everything will get better soon. As the sirens get louder, I start to black out.
I wake up to a bright light above me. I soon notice that it's not from a hospital room. I hear angles singing angelically in the distance. The light begins to move down towards me. I feel an inner peace overtake my body as I see the face of God. I realize that I had indeed died.
