Mystic Falls, 1863:
"Come on, Amelia!"
Candice ran toward the carnival, hitching her skirt slightly up to stop herself tripping. It was safe to say that she was excited, Amelia laughing as she raced to catch up. Since Damon left to serve in the war, the eldest Evans sister had been considerably down, so this was Candice's way of cheering her up. Their Mother agreed they should go enjoy themselves, giving them some money to spend on whatever they please, and even the weather seemed to be on their side.
The sun was shining brightly, and there wasn't a cloud to be seen around.
"I'm coming." Amelia huffed out in a laugh, stopping to catch her breathe. "You forget how much faster you are."
Stopping to let her older sister catch up, Candice looped her arm through Amelia's, and they chatted as they wandered through the crowds gathered to enjoy the festivities. A stage set up, both sisters stopped to see a man stood a stage, with a large sign hung behind him.
"A kissing booth." Candice noted, before eyeing the man up and down. He was clearly older than her, but looked good either way, well dressed with shining blue eyes. "Amelia, you must have a go. We both know blue eyes are your type."
The eldest Evans girl scoffed, nudging Candice in the side with her elbow. "I do not have a type."
"What is Damon to you then?" Candice asked her, keeping an innocence to her tone that Amelia rolled her eyes at.
"Damon, dear sister, is my friend." She told her firmly, before pulling two pennies from her pocket. "Now, if you want a go, be my guest. I, on the other hand, will happily sit this one out."
Before Candice could respond, both girls had no time to comprehend what was happening, as they were tugged onto the stage. Amelia was first to realize what had happened, as the man running the booth smiled at them both with a charming smile, that seemed to have the crowd gathered swooning.
"Why, I appear to have struck gold." The man began, as they both looked at him with polite smiles. "Two beautiful sisters." Taking Candice's hand, he kissed the top of it gently. "I'm Julian, ladies. Who might you beauties be?"
Her cheeks tinted red, the youngest sister answered. "I'm Candice, sir. And this is my sister, Amelia."
Upon hearing their names, the smile on Julian's face grew, though neither sister appeared to notice. Instead, Amelia could only giggle at her younger sisters growing excitement, and looked down as Julian smiled at her directly.
She did not know why, but something about her didn't sit right with him.

Candice sat crossed legged on her bed, with a book open in her hands, reading quietly to herself. The house appeared to be quiet, apart from the rare laughter from Mary Louise and Nora, as they played tricks on the hostage in their room. It had been a few days since Malcolm's funeral, and Damon had kept his word, and had left Mystic Falls in exchange for Amelia being left alone and Elena kept safe.
At Lily's request, they had kept hold of Caroline, none of them sure why but none of them complaining.
"What are you doing?" A voice questioned, and Candice didn't bother to look up.
"Reading." She stated in a dull tone, rolling her eyes. "Something I can help you with, Valerie?"
"Caroline." Valerie stated, making Candice raise a brow as she perched herself at the end of the bed. "Who is she, exactly?"
